What did you do in the garden today?

funny note: did you know that despite being legal to buy in all states, many states make it illegal (as in felony) to grow them. I saw an article awhile back where this woman was busted by the dea for growing poppies in her heirloom gardens.

Flanders poppy are legal. Only the soniferium group are illegal. Peony flowered, bread seed, and Danish flag types. They argue about this all the time. The Peony flowered ones they try to exempt due to low levels of opium and ornamental use.

Sat and stared at the tarped beds....Wondering when and where the energy will come from to step out and start the tiller... Where the heck is my COFFEE. I hate gardening...lol

Had my coffee hours ago. Headed to town to buy potting mix seeds etc.. Plus ,Farm & Fleet ,Menards. I have spring Fever for sure.

I had no idea that some poppies are illegal to grow in some states. Here there are many varieties, but I couldn't swear that they were opium type poppies or not. Flanders poppies are the traditional cornfield type. You can save the seeds and use them on bread or cakes but I have never done that. I look forward to seeing the gardens and hedgerows ablaze at harvest time with these beautiful, delicate flowers. A small but heartfelt tribute to the bravest of the brave.

We just bought a house within the last month, so in the garden today I planted 4 things of romaine lettuce and a raspberry plant. Our soil is pretty awful (parts are like clay and there are rocks in the ground). I'm off to pick up a hoe to "till" the soil. We also have rabbits, quail, and ducks and the city offers free compost so my soil will be a work in progress.

I was under the impression the bread seed was the somniferum variety. That's why my brother-in-law can't have poppy seed bagels - he runs an airplane shop at the airport.

@hosspak I wish I had a tiller, I'm "tilling" up my land by hand using a hoe. Our soil isn't very good here, its like a clay and has a lot of rocks in it. I started a compost bin though and will be ordering worms soon to speed up the process!

Find organics!!!!! leaves, shredded newspapers, garden soil what ever you can find to loosen up that clay. Test your soil now so you can start amending it now...

Knockin the dust off the updates from the Crazy H-Bar Ranch and soon to be veggie jungle; After the coffee the energy came...Only to find that the tiller wasn't working, after taking the all the safety switches and trip buttons out and installing a simple toggle switch, she was up and running...We were finally able to get back to the garden today... First we laid down plenty of nitrogen because the test indicated that it was badly needed. Then we tilled everything in. The soil looks so much better this year than last year, just look how dark it is after the tilling. We had to put the Grandsons to work. (They will never say they are bored again! lol) After we leveled everything out, more fertilizer, a lot of water and the tarps laid back out, just for tonight. Tomorrow the drippers get set up.... So tomorrow we commence the planting...

After the work it was time to relax and spend time with family, friends, food and some awesome music in Fullerton!

We have a compost bin and are getting free compost from the city eventually. Right now the soil is wet from rain so we won't be doing anything today.
