What did you do in the garden today?

Seed Saver catalog just came! Already started my Wish List! This next year I'm really tempted to ask DH to till me a bigger spot in our side pasture to grow a bigger corn patch. Previously this was impossible because of the horses but we don't have any currently as they are at the training barn. I'd still have to put up a temporary fence to keep goats and critters out though. Anyway... Dreaming about this option and still have a few months to convince DH of my vision. 😂

Resistance is futile.
Oh I’m well aware! I already gave in to the little voice telling me to plant squash and started planning for it. 😅 Mostly I’m trying to put it off as long as possible in case one or more of the varieties I’m looking at turn up at the seed library. It’s happened twice now after I bought seeds, and would also greatly simplify the decision-making process.

Otherwise I’m going to end up buying all three, and fight with myself over which will go into the planter. 🍉🍈

Stopped by the garden on my way down to the mailbox. I dumped one of the rain gauges sometime last week. It had over 3 inches in it this morning (it rained yesterday). The other rain gauge, which hasn't been dumped all month, had water to the brim and running over so at least 8 inches! :celebrate

Most of the garlic has sprouted now. Everything came up except maybe 3-4 cloves. It's the first time I actually paid for garlic bulbs from an online vendor (Johnny's) instead of simply sprouting local grocery store garlic.

Lettuce and carrots seeds I sowed 2 weeks ago are SLOWLY sprouting and growing. A little annoyed by how slow they are taking off... In comparison, the broccoli, cabbage, and carrots that were planted in the spring and toughed it through the hot summer are flourishing with new growth. Looking forward to a second harvest there... Still have some strawberries hanging on and even gathered a handful of green beans that I thought were done for the season.

Lastly I am super, super impressed with the results of this indoor greenhouse I bought to get my cocoa tree through the winter. It's currently housing the cocoa tree, 3 Russian pomegranate seedlings, 2 small pineapple plants, and my vanilla bean orchid. It's maintaining 75 degrees and around 85% humidity in a stable environment and I've only had to water plants once in a month. The soil is maintaining good moisture without being soggy. The cocoa tree is so happy in there that it's grown almost 8 inches in a month! 😍 The only thing not doing well is the vanilla bean orchid, but it was dying before I even brought it inside... I'll probably have to order another one and start again.

Still no rain here. Driest fall on record which is funny cuz we had, I think, the wettest spring on record. 🤨 But rain is coming! :celebrate

I'm still getting (everbearing) strawberries, which is insane. Carrots are coming along, slowly. I've got them & the greens covered tonight. I added incandescent lights to the greens under the frost cover but haven't turned them on yet. Trying to grow lettuce/spinach as long as I can.

The garden fence is done, except for 1 gate that we'll do in the spring. That feels fantastic.

That's my life story! I was just looking for some seeds to buy & I keep going back & forth on melons. So not worth the trouble. Unless they grow. Then so worth the trouble. :lau

A bit of a rant. My phone by accident I somehow turned off notifications on 2 contacts. Took it into Verison store. Took him 15 minutes to figure it out. Looked it up on his phone no luck then on a tablet. Tried and tried but finally got it. Why is it so easy to do by accident and so hard to undo? I now think I should have deleted those 2 contacts and then added them back.

Rain finally in the forecast. It may start as early as this evening and continue until Saturday. The Brussel sprouts still might make it. I’ll see how they are after being properly moisturized. I’ll be finishing up the leaves clean up today and putting some wind barriers on the chicken runs. They help keep the blowing rain out as well. My ever bearing strawberries are still blooming as well @Sueby.

Tonight will be the first night below 30F. We have mustard and beets out there. Also peas, which I’ll pick today bc they won’t last, but hoping the mustard and beets are ok-usually mustard is good until mid 20s, so we will find out. We chopped the tops off the carrots, and covered and mulched them. Trying the “harvest thru winter” method, rather than picking all now.
