What did you do in the garden today?

:idunno I'm not quite sure how that Canakan is any better than a plastic bag with seeds on cloth or a paper towel in it and then set on a heating mat would work? Seems like a gimmick to me, but I did check out the link in the YouTube video to see how much they sell it for. I could not get any price on the item because they don't have any for sell, something blamed on recent tariffs and availability.

Maybe those [edit: "cannabis enthusiasts"] have the time and energy to treat every seedling as precious as a first-born infant, but I tend to start and pot my garden seedlings in bulk, putting 2 or 3 seeds in each starting pot (net cup), and pruning back to the one healthiest plant. That method seems to work well for me and I don't have to buy any special gizmo for the initial germination.

I do agree that the roots of the seedlings might grow into the paper towel if you use that method for germination prior to potting up the seedling. Some people have told me that using fabric cloth will prevent the seedling root from growing into the material, and thereby you have less damaged seedlings whe

I have saved an old pair of blue jeans that got ripped up in the seat. I am going to cut that into squares to put in my baggies, or in my seed germination containers, to see if the denim works better than paper towels.

I only use the "paper towel" method of germination for my old seeds that I expect might have poor germination rates due to their age. No need to waste time and energy potting up old seeds if you expect only 10% germination rate, for example. Just use the paper towel method first to see which seeds are still viable.

:tongue Having watched that video and gone to the website of that canakan item, I'm probably on some government watch list now! If you guys don't hear anything from me in the near future, just assume I'm locked up in some hole in the ground.

:old Well, it's not the first "gardening" video I have watched that turned out how to grow cannabis better. But like I said, those cannabis videos usually treat each and every seed like a precious child and are willing to put in all kinds of time and effort into the process. I only grow garden vegetables. I bulk plant and prune seedlings. It's just a totally different approach on some levels.

I use paper towel on top of soil in pot. I put seeds then another piece of paper towel and some soil on top. when I water pots paper towels dissolve and by the time plants are ready to transplant there is no trace of paper. the second layer of towel is to prevent seeds from moving when watering.

:lau Recently I was responding to a question on another thread. It was about using paper shreds as coop bedding. I gave my answer, as best I could, and then decided to ask Microsoft Copilot AI about the issue. It came back with lots of information that I agreed with in the response. So, I figured I must be on the right track. When I checked the references for that AI response, it listed the thread I started here on the BYC forums as the first reference! No wonder I agreed with the content! It was just restating many points I had already posted here and comments from other members who responded to that thread.

🤔 I'm not quite sure how I feel about Microsoft Copilot AI using the thread I started here on the BYC forum as the first reference in its response. Maybe we all need to consider how valuable our input and experiences we post here might be used by others. Evidently, the AI engines are reading our posts and giving them weight.

:caf Of course, I have used other search engines and also got references back to the BYC forums, but that was the first time I got a response that referenced a thread that I started.

:old But let me link you to that thread, Using Shredded Paper for Coop Litter - As Good As Wood Chips? because one of the best advantages to using paper shreds in the coop as bedding is that the paper shreds compost much faster than other methods of bedding I have used. All that paper shreds compost eventually makes it way to my food gardens. If that sounds interesting to anyone, check it out if you get a chance.

as I said before AI thinks I am a man as I do a lot of research for tools and "man's jobs" :lau

:old  Guess I'm showing my age and lack of knowledge in that area. I'm thinking a pack of garden seeds costs less than $2.00. If I had to pay $15.00 per cannabis seed, I guess I would be putting a lot of time and effort into each seed.

Thanks for the knowledge boost. I had no idea...

🤔 BTW, when I referenced "pot heads" in a previous post, it was not to denigrate them as much as to separate them out from "gardeners" who grow food. I should probably use a more friendly term. I looked it up and it was suggested I use "cannabis enthusiasts" as a more respectful term for people who grow and use cannabis. I will try to be better. No offense meant, but words have weight, so I went back and edited my previous statement.

I hate drugs. so "cannabis enthusiasts" sound to me as calling pedophiles "child lovers".

I know some say cannabis is not a drug but for me it is. I shared apartment in italy with a girl who used cannabis every day. she kept vomiting all day long. I lived there for 2 months only. could not find another place sooner.

Last year I bought some off brand potting soil for my seed starting. The seeds germinated, but the plants never took off and I had to restart over in some MiracleGro potting soil. The new plants in MiracleGro were fine. Lesson learned, don't buy the cheap stuff. Here are a few options I am looking at to try this year.

Does anyone have an opinion on Schultz Potting Soil Plus?

I can get a 2 cubic foot bag of that for about $10.00. That would be enough for all my seed starting for the year. I like how it says it will feed the plant for up to 9 months. I need my plants in the potting soil, indoors, for 2 months before I transplant them into the gardens.

The MiracleGro is twice the price, but I would get it if it was twice as good. It says it will feed up to 6 months. I just don't know which is a better deal. Or maybe some other options?

I would appreciate any advice on which soil to use for seed starting and growing tomato and pepper plants, indoors, for 8 weeks before transplanting. I don't want to repeat my mistake last year with poor potting soil.

EDIT: I cannot use my Black Gold chicken run compost for my seed starting indoors. There is just too much life in that compost, and I got a lot of little bugs inside the house. Someday I hope to have a greenhouse outside, but until then, I need sterile potting soils inside the house.

That sounds more like she got the munchies and then purged whatever she ate so she didn’t gain weight. Cannqbis doesn’t do that to people; it is used often with cancer patients to help them get hungry so they eat and keep the food down. More issues with that girl than cannabis use.

I saw a video where this gardener used different soils for plants and the miracle gro did give good results, some of the best. So it does what it says because there’s a fertilizer in the mix.

Seeds don’t need that fertilizer to sprout, they have everything on board needed to accomplish that and soil without additional fertilizer is recommended for seed starting. Look up Mel’s mix, you can find a recipe online for it. It’s basically some coco coir, peat moss if you want, vermiculite and perlite and compost. It turns out nice and light and I have had excellent luck using that as a seed starter as well as a general mix for my beds when I was filling them up. I think maybe it was @Sally PB who made it for her Greenstalk?

Once you have your sprouts, then fertilize with quarter or half strength fertilizer every couple of weeks. Pour the water into the tray below and not over the top of the soil. Always water seed starts that way and you’ll avoid a lot of issues.
