What did you do in the garden today?

😱😢

…plant some dill? Mine attracted hoverflies last year that made the aphids practically evaporate.
This is inside my hoop house so hover flies won't be able to get in there... I have a healthy population of spiders but still not enough to resolve the avalanche of aphids...

Have you tried seeding your carrots with the cornstarch method? I've always had good luck with it. The carrots are spaced better and the cornstarch slurry seems to keep them moist for germination.
I have not- I have read about it. What a good idea. I'll put it in my garden journal to try next year. Thank you!

Picked a bunch of stuff tonight to make a garden salad. This included a couple of volunteer carrots - one purple dragon and a couple of kuroda orange carrots. My experience with purple carrots holds... It's a hard, woody, and bitter experience. The kuroda were soft and sweet. I don't think I'm going to grow purple carrots again.
I wonder if it's the variety. I grew that same variety last year. They were .. ok.. nothing to write home about. My very autistic grandson LOVES to pull carrots up, so I planted those as a surprise. He loved it! But to eat I wasn't impressed.

Aphids... Ugh. I hate them so much. They easily get through my insect netting and multiply to problem levels in the blink of an eye. I just sprayed for aphids a couple of days ago... And already. :barnie

The English thyme I placed under my okra plants seem to be deterring the aphids. I haven't seen any infested plants since then. However, I did spray malathion once on the day I introduced the thyme.

Spray for something that bad. A soil drench of the first one in pic. Menards has it on clearance.

I’ve never managed good enough results with non-orange carrots of any kind to be able to compare. Or non-traditional-colored peppers. 😅 They’re usually box store multi-colored packs though, maybe if I tried a dedicated variety from a seed store I’d have better luck. 🤔
