What did you do in the garden today?

C
Picked two each zucchini and cucumbers. And about 3/4 pounds of green beans. I packed most of the beans into a jar of leftover dill pickle juice, and sliced the cukes and put them in another jar of juice. Not sure how they'll turn out going into the jars fresh and not being processed.
cook those beans for 8-10 minutes, then put them back in the pickle juice and they'll be fine. Love dill beans!

I’m correct in assuming this is the work of a deer, right? :(

Yes, that looks like a deer problem. You might consider doing something to protect those plants soon. They got a taste now and will probably decide they like them and end up doing a lot more damage. And deer can do a lot of damage overnight.

A few years ago I noticed a few plants were nipped on by deer and I thought, Well, that's not a big deal. The next morning my garden was pretty much decimated.

Yeah, we’ll probably debate putting up a fence. In the eight years we’ve lived here, I’ve seen deer four times in the neighborhood, and only once did I see a doe in the yard, a couple years ago. Fingers crossed it doesn’t come back…

The beans planted next to the onions are definitely affected by their nasty companions. Leaves on the vines keep dying and the plants are not doing well at all. Compare those to the control row of beans, planted two weeks later, that are far away from any onions. Quite a difference! It was an educational experiment.

I thought that and now have a browse line 5 ft up the arborvitae trees

I pulled up a few shallots and onions that had tops dropping over yesterday and have them drying on the rabbit cage. I think it's too soon to be pulling them out of the ground but I needed some to cook with. I grew these from seeds I started indoors last December. First time I had success with onion seeds.

I have some braising right now with a chicken, along with tomatoes and tomato sauce, garlic, herbs and spices and some lime juice for acidity. I'll taste it later, might need a half-teaspoon of sugar if there's any bitterness from the tomatoes.

And I have a loaf of bread baking to soak up the juice. I threw a Jalapeno pepper in the dutch oven to give it a little heat.
