What did you do in the garden today?

Canning day today. 14 half pints plus 3 pints of bread and butter pickles, and 7 pints of raw pack green beans that were picked this morning. I cut the beans into short 1 inch sections thinking smaller pieces would pack into the jars better. I was out in the garden in the dark at 5am this morning picking cukes for the pickles too. Long, long day.

Got the big weed whacker out. It has a head with nylon blades. I only use it on really tough stuff. Not used since this time last year. A few pulls and it ran. Ragweed is blooming time to cut it down before it sets seed.

My elderly cat decided to pee on my area rug yesterday. Not sure if she couldn't get to the litter box or was just mad that I kicked her out of the bedroom at night. 🫩 So I've spent the past 4 hours disinfecting, sanitizing, and shampooing the rug in the garage. This is the very reason I refuse to allow carpet in my house at all. Everything is hardwood floors or ceramic tile... At least area rugs can be taken outside and thoroughly cleaned. If it was carpet, I'd have to end up tearing it out. No thanks...

Of course I'd love to hang it in the sun to sanitize and dry but of course it's cloudy and thinking about spitting for a moment or two.

I have an elderly gal that deals with Cystitis. A vet can give you meds to help if need be. If she does it again, I would make an appointment. I loved the day I got oak floors in my house. I get a enzyme cleaner and that really helps. And of course when you get sun.

My son and new daughter in law bought a fixer upper house. Their yard is basically a dumpster fire hot mess. We have been spending last couple days cleaning it all up, doing all the things and so excited that they are planning a big garden! The next generation carrying on the gardening tradition. My momma heart is happy.

Oh and one of my garlic varieties has bulb mites. we'll have to get though the silverwhite variety quickly.

I found tiny black mites on my garlic last year. I treated all my planting cloves last October. I'm going to have to remember what I did to treat them...

I picked 6 qts of Concord grapes and 12 qts of catawbas. I still have about 12 qts on the vine of those still ripening. I left plenty on both vines for the birds and bunnies, and drunk bumble bees.
The concords I juiced today and will do jelly tomorrow or Sunday.
The catawbas my son will juice and do pink jelly at his place.
I also severed the tomatoes at the ground to send them in to ripening mode. It's shocking how many green are still out there that haven't made it to whiting stage.
Everything is 2 weeks behind and a hearty chill has come early. GRRRRR.
Oh well.
Roof is done, Siding is 99% done, deck is about halfway. I'm sick of contractors, al-be-them-very NICE, underfoot. Although, stuck here I did manage to get the backsplash on the laundry sink done. It's only taken me 12 years to get to that. DH splashes around like a trained seal begging for a fish when he washes his hands. I was tired of streaky paint 12 years ago. LOL.
Tomorrow morning I'll start working on getting a new roof on the chicken run. At least the joists. maybe will get to the plywood. Then I'll coat it in blackjack and order the steel.

I read once that a common reason cats piddle outside their litter box has to do with a possible UTI. Apparently, they associate the litter box with the pain and thus avoid it. Maybe worth a vet visit.

Yes, that can happen but that's not the only reason. They will also do it when stressed/angry or when marking territory.
In this case, Lily had to go through the living room to get to the other side of the house where the additional litter boxes are located. Our dog, Freya, likes to chase the cats...and sometimes she will sit in the doorway to the back half of the house. None of the cats will try to get past her when she does that... Normally that's not an issue because we have a litter box (cabinet enclosed) in our bedroom which is where Lily likes to spend 90% of her time.

However I kicked her out of the bedroom because she was being super disruptive while we were trying to sleep. Meowing incessantly. Jumping on the headboard and then down next to DH's head. Clawing at stuff she isn't supposed to.

So it's more likely that she was either unable to get past the dog to get to the litter box or she was mad that I've been kicking her out most nights lately.

I'm so jealous... I lost all my grape harvest to fungal disease because of the crazy amount of rain we had this spring. Even spraying copper sulfate frequently didn't help.

That's now 2 years in a row I've gotten ZERO harvest.
