What did you do in the garden today?

Haven't done anyhting yet as I just got home from work but am about to go pick a medley of salad leaves for dinner, some broccolini and some mangetout (snow peas to the Aussies)

Well that could be a reason.But we have a lot of bees attracted thru the pumpkin flowers lately. Maybe they missed some. Hopefully the others are polinated.

I occasionally use a small brush and hand pollinate them to be sure.

On my zucchini bread plants I used to take the male flowers and rub the stem into the female flowers, almost 80% success rate.

It has been raining every day for what seems like weeks. It has been snowing a few days too. This is the time of year when garlic gets planted. I have been worrying that I won't be able to do it. Finally this past Wednesday (day off) I managed to get into the garden and get it all planted. My 2 pullets/29 weeks old, love to "help" me whenever I have been digging this fall. They scratch and peck right where I am working, they love dew worms. It hasn't been an issue until Wednesday. I had my furrows dug, compost added, holes poked and most of the cloves in when all the fun began. I like to leave the rows uncovered so I can see where I left off when moving along.
The hens realized that I was working in fresh soft soil and decided to scratch through all my garlic in progress. Scratch, scratch, kick! If they could smile I'm sure they were. They looked so happy. It was all I could do not to laugh while I shooed them away. Of course I couldn't see where the newly planted cloves were and just then I see a clove land to my left. The chickens were out of the garden, what? There is my cat, running and sliding into the new planting, rolling and kicking just like every spring when I plant my onion sets. Thanks for the help girls. ha ha Only one displaced clove. Not bad. We'll see what happens in the spring with the new helpers. Never bored out there, that's for sure.

The gardener is on his way to carry out a final tidy ready for the big party on Tuesday. We mainly need the grass cut and that's about it. The paths are clear and the gazebos or clean and tidy. My son will arrive from the UK to share my birthday for the first time since I came to live here and I'm looking forward to seeing him and introducing him to many of our Thai and expat. friends. It will probably be his first outdoor party in the month of November.

I shall have the onerous task today of watching the gardener and Mrs. TT cutting and clearing. On Tuesday morning, the garden will be transformed by the appearance of bbqs and ice boxes.

Emptied the compost that's been brewing all summer season long into the now empty fall garden beds. I do the lasagna method, so no tilling, no digging - just plop on top and let ol' man winter do his thing with the snow and cold.

I'll sip a cup of tea and look over notes from this year to see what to do differently in our sq. foot garden beds. A maple tree has grown significantly this past year - so one bed that was part-sun is now light sun at best! Wow, who knew that would happen so fast?! (3yrs?).

Putting feet up - resting from the toil - enjoying the winter break to plot and plan for 2014!

I don't have a big garden this year, so I just cut down my Dahlias, looking forward to separating the tubers in a few days!
