What did you do in the garden today?

I realize that I'm severely behind on my vegetable gardening.. I haven't planted a THING yet!

Hopefully this weekend I can run the tiller and start planting my potatoes and corn...
But as far as flower gardening is concerned, I'm doing well!! I bought a rose bush yesterday which led me to buying another rose bush today and also a lilac bush that I've been wanting FOREVER. I'm so excited to plant them!! I'm trying to decide the best place to plant the lilac bush, but I already know where I want my rose bushes to go. :)
we plant may 24 weekend here.

Planted my pole beans just before the rain started. Planted Kentucky blue a favorite of mine . Plus Fortex a new one for me. I like the long slender types that are slow to develop large seeds. Older now and like standing to pick.

I planted my pole lima beans today and my son built a trellis out of tobacco sticks for them to run on. Also planted squash and cucumber seeds.

I miss tobacco sticks. I grew up near Mullins SC, lots of tobacco barns. One of the first money making gigs I remember was climbing up into the top of the tobacco barn and capturing pigeons to sell for 50 cents each to a lady down the road. Anyway, today I collected eggs, put in 6 posts for my wattle fence I am building. Hoped to have it done this weekend, but its going to rain. Maybe by next week. I want to let the little chicks out to roam one day soon. They are getting a little big for the brooder. I checked the asparagus and tomatoes. Pole beans are starting up the trellis. Squash has sprouted. I planted brussel sprouts under the trellis, I'm hoping the shade of the beans will help them. Anybody here ever grow brussel sprouts?

gosh the weathers been so nice 70's, felt so good to walk barefoot across the grass. Planted broccolie, cabbage,(spur of the moment purchases) pansy, cranberry beans, zucchini, borage. Potted up cardinal climbers and susuan vines rediscovered my kitchen table now that seedlings are done. Put out the night shade family Saturday once I get all the cloches cut (had frost Tuesday morning). Ticks are wicked this year.

Wow, Mullins SC. I'm a carolina Mullins.

Anyway, I finally have a good garden start. Potatoes, onions, tomatoes, basil, parsley, sunflowers, cucumbers, peanuts, peppers, cantelope zucchini, yellow crookneck, kholrabi, lettuce, and peas are off and running. Sage came back volunteer. Still have black corn, beans, blackeye peas, okra, butternut squash, and a few more herbs to put out. Then to figure out where to plant sweet potatoes and what to plant in my other spaces.

Weird gardening year for me. Usually I have more plants than space. This year I have more space than plants.

Fed black solder fly composter and turned my big compost bins. Chickens help with the turning, I just pile it up on one side then they get it leveled by the end of the day. Later I can pile it the compost the other way and they level it out again. Saves me time.
