What did you do in the garden today?

Purple trumpet vine. I had one that took over my grapefruit tree so I had to remove it. Beautiful blooms though and they come in a few different colors from pink to lavender to violet.

Thank you so much!

Haven't posted here before, but we finally got our seeds started!

It's been a long trial to get our garden space cleared of trees and tree trunks, but we only have two left and they are almost out of the ground. It's a 100x20ft garden space, so we cleared about a dozen trees.

Our spare bedroom has turned into our seeds' room. Can't wait for this garden to get started. We have 480 cups planted for just food and herb crops. We are also going to start 100 sunflowers, 50 sweet and 50 Mexican marigolds, 40 lavender, 40 bee's friend, and 40 butterfly weed next weekend.

Welcome Meaghan! Keep us posted on how your garden goes. We all love pics. I love to see what gardening looks like in other parts of the country. That's a lot of seedlings.

My spare bedroom is my seedling room also... And I brood chicks and ducklings in there...

I'm watering my starts with the ducklings swimming water... Hope it's a good idea.

Some of my tomatoes.... Thought this was kind a neat, sure illustrates how lumens reduce over distance. The plants that are pale and spindly in the top of the picture were in a Northern window about a foot away from my grow light and the dark green plants in the bottom of the picture have been under the grow light (about 6 to 8 inches distance) since they sprouted... Moved everyone under the light last night...

Don't ya just love seed starting! Are you growing any veggies?
That's what I meant by the food crops! Sorry if that wasn't clear. We have a ton of veggie varieties, and some fruits as well.

It was a pain to get all arranged, but I'm super excited to see how well these sprout. We mixed some compost together with regular garden soil to start them in.

Here, the soil is very sandy. We are debating on laying down some tarping and putting topsoil in instead but it would be very expensive for a 2000sqft garden.

woot! I found some tiny potatoes today! I guess I missed some of those last fall too. I covered them back up and marked the spot, hopefully I wont loose them.

A funny thing happened to me as I was turning a compost pile today. Keep in mind I have not been sleeping well, and just over a week ago my sister and I "put on our big girl panties" and butchered our first chicken ever.

I was about two inches from the bottom of the pile when something slimy 2 inches long and roundish started rolling and then moving on its own. My little sleep deprived mind immediately thought it was a chicken heart! But no, we killed the chicken at my sister's house and did not put any of it into the compost pile...I was startled, but I couldn't move or look away. I was frozen, mesmerized, bent over it, just staring as it started climbing. (This was in slow motion, and all happened in a split second.) I was hunched over a little toad! All covered in broken pine needles and bits of dirt, he had buried himself deep in the compost pile and I'm really glad that I didn't hurt him with my pitchfork. Turns out he was not the chicken heart- I was.

Anyone else ever find critters in their compost. Sometimes I see spiders, but I try not to think about that.

Had a big toad and its family around the front of my house but only deer and birds in the compost. The occasional wild Turkey. But mostly little ones.
How did your first processing go? Sounds like you've had a pretty full schedule.

Since getting chickens, I have very few critters of that sort. And, I'm really fond of them. I love my snakes. Like toads and even frogs equally as well. Salamanders fare just a bit better, as they seem to find good hidey spots under rocks and logs and such. Mostly, I find the little red newts, and the big black ones with the white spots. Occasionally, a snapping turtle will wander through the yard.

On the garden front: I picked up a few more seed packets. Found some Dahlia seeds at 20 cents/pack. I LOVE Dahlias, especially when I can grow them from seed. The seeds planted last week are starting to germinate, including some 6 year old tomato seeds. Still 2+' of snow in the garden.
