What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday, when I was dumping bags of leaves in the garden, I got an unexpected present! I found a bit of a plant that was nice and pink, about 2" long at it's largest "nub". It was still attached to the old leaves from last year, so, I was able to identify it as a peony. It had 2 eyes. So, instead of planting it somewhere where the chickens or Maggie could dig it up and destroy it, I potted it up. Can't wait to see what color it is... if it survives! Amazing that it didn't freeze, laying in that bag all winter. Speaks well to God's plan of using mulch to preserve plants for the following year! My Amaryllis decided to bloom yesterday, also! I paid 50 cents for that bulb 3 years ago, and have had 3 seasons of stunning blossoms. It's pink and white splashed. It has a baby that eventually should be moved to an other pot.

Awesome! I had several rose trimmings that I didn't want and I throw them in a pile of leaves and they started coming out when spring came.

LG I watched a video on the County Extension office grafting some trees and the young trees he was grafting to were live and not dormant. The scion wood was dormant and he had it in a cooler.

Here is the video if you would like to watch it. He also does a 4 flap graft which I really like and am going to do with some of my hickory and pecan trees.

Thanks. That method looks like it's a bit more challenging than the standard 45* Z cut. But, I can see how it would be successful. There's a Fedco Tree sale in early May. I may take a trip down there and pick up some more root stock to play around with. I have Bartlett, Friendly, and Seckel scions in my fridge.

I've been moving perennials from a small bed to another new bed, in preparation for extending my run. I still need to plant my potato starts and garlic! I'm tired, but it's a good tired. Better than any "tired" from sitting at a desk all day! Glad I don't have to do that anymore! Weather has been amazing these last few days. I hope spring arrives to the snowbound soon!

Your welcome.
What kind of tree sale is Fedco having? I looked at their page but it looks like they are out of everything.

GN sounds like your having a nice time gardening in your new found retirement. Enjoy!
