What did you do in the garden today?

I’ve been unsuccessful containing plants like mint in a bucket set in the ground. The roots grow out but looking at all those little pollinators buzzing around when it’s blooming I kind of think seeds might sprout too. The way I contain it is grow it in a corner where I can keep it mowed around it. It tries to spread and I ruthlessly beat I back with the mower.

That's what I do. Dry lots of herbs and flowers and then in winter months I can enjoy them .

I like to cut the bottom off a spackle bucket, and bury the bucket in the ground to contain those naughty plants, but they will eventually escape even that.  To provide ultimate control, plant them in a pot ABOVE ground, and put a saucer under the pot so they get NO ground contact.  I dried some parsley last fall, and it lasted me all winter.  Still have 1/2 of a jar left.  Awesome flavor.  Need to dry a lot more spices this season.

I considered that but I really wanted a pretty space, and my pots are anything but pretty. I do not mind to much it taking over outside my garden, it can go ahead and compete with the ditch weed, stinging nettle, morning glories and thistles... I would even cheer it on .

Beware, plants in the mint family are extremely invasive.  But, if you take a shovel in the spring, and cut deeply to sever the runners, and yank them out, you may be able to contain it.  Lemon balm is well behaved, IMO.

Onions & Heirloom Tomatoes from seed.
I think I mixed some aged chicken manure into this soil?
I switched to fish emulsion & liquid kelp this year. So far so good.

I have oregano, mint, lemon balm and thyme growing in places here and there in my yard. There's also an obnoxious weed with a scalloped leaf, and a purple flower, a viney thing that grows like crazy here. (Creeping Charlie) If not for that, I'd not have much of a lawn. But Charlie has a pungent minty smell. I think it'd be great as an aromatic to add to the nest boxes.

Top worked this wild flowering pear over to fruiting pear last year . Up to 6 foot of growth . Boards are support for new growth . Added 1 new graft .
One of the graft unions . I used sprouts to graft onto after I cut back the tree .

I did this one a week or so ago . 4 in 1 . Maxine is the growth from last years graft . Savanac , Hudar another one I forgot . Possibly Honey sweet .
New growth . Looks promising .
