What did you do in the garden today?

This is from a couple days ago now, but we got the tomato and tomatillo plants planted! I have a little herb garden that I didn't take a picture of, but I had no idea how many different species of normal everyday herbs there really are!

How do you root your rose cuttings? I've always taken softwood cuttings, stripped the bottom leaves, dipped in rooting hormone, and stuck in potting soil, and they've always died. I cover the plant with a plastic bag to create sort of a greenhouse.
Try layering . Just bend a cane down and cover with dirt or a rock . Cut it free next year . I have no luck with cuttings either .

Even with geraniums, I find that using the older hardened stems is the only way to get them to root. If the stem is soft and "new" it just rots. I've never had luck with rose cuttings. I plan to layer my high bush cranberry.

Jerry, have you had any luck layering fruit trees? I have some seedling plums that I'd love to propagate. Would love to propagate one of my hybrid apricots also. And, how bout starting apples and pears from seed. Any tricks there?

Thanks Jerry! I'll try that, if I end up not finding a bigger property. I have some nice old-fashioned roses I've had for about 20 years that I'd love to propagate and take with me. They're on their own roots, so I know they'll stay "true."

LG, my perennial geranium seems to be the one perennial that reseeds! I've divided it too. Love that little bugger!

Going to try fruit trees this year . On plums many will send up root suckers . All the native plums do .Grafted plums are on root stocks that usually do not sucker . You could try root cuttings on plum .

Apple and pear seeds are easy to sprout . Must go through winter or at least a cool moist period .

[/IMG]. Anyway, start with a stem with a. bloom. Cut off the bloom. Count down three leaf axils. Make a cut just below the third leaf axil. Make the cut 1/4 inch below axils on a slant the same as a rose triming cut. Take off the bottom leaf and leave the top leaf. Dip in rooting powder and stick in half peat and half sand. Keep moist and keep the humidity high and wait.
