What did you do in the garden today?

Finished my weekend petsitting stint. Good stuff. Spent about 2 hours outside staking and pruning more tomatoes. They're ALMOST manageable now! The bees seem to be bouncing back, no swarming or anything, and they are re-sealing their comb so that's good. Tomorrow they get a new feeder.

I also watered. And while I was watering I discovered that my mystery cucurbits are.... Cucumbers! I was honestly not expecting that. We had some over-ripe cantaloupes crack and break on the ground and garden beds, so I expected those. I don't know what kind of cucumber they are. We grew SOME cucumbers last year but I thought we got all of them and made pickles out of all of them. I guess not!

This morning I checked on the pumpkins & squash that we planted into our "pumpkin patch" yesterday (the ones that have been growing on the porch for weeks). They looked a little better than they did last night. Last night, most of them were looking kind of sorry. They were watered well yesterday, and this morning I watered them again. Several of them had perked up a bit, and some look really good. Many had flowers open this morning, also. I think most, if not all of them are going to make it. Luckily, we're having a somewhat hazy day today so they don't have really strong sun to contend with. It will give them a little time to get more settled in before having really strong sunlight.

I mentioned to Hubs that it would be cute to have a garden stake for the pumpkin patch area, so he is talking about taking a piece of wood, cutting it into the shape of a pumpkin, painting it, and then writing "Pumpkin Patch" on it, and attaching it to a stake so we can stick it out there. I think that would be so cute!

Other than that, I spent the morning watering several areas, and doing a little weeding, as well. My knees are acting up today, so I'm not really doing a whole lot of gardening. My recliner (and the AC) feels so much better! :)
I would label mine "The Great Pumpkin" in honor of peanuts

going to cut a salad from the garden lettuce I planted and we had salads from are back up planted new lettuce seed but has not sprouted and my mustard seed has not shown signs of growing but arugula is up so dill and oregano a few tomatoes
I think i will have salad tonight too.

Not much gets done in garden when temps get this high. Made sure things were watered. Going to have another tomato sandwich for dinner. This tomato is doing real well with our heat. They are smaller but very flavorful. I do have a shade screen for the first time this year.

Pictures above...couldn't move them down...
I love my Columbian Wyandotte as dual purpose...besides being a tasty meaty carcass, they are great layers, wonderful mothers and warm up to you the more time you spend with them. I have several who follow me around and offer suggestions on what I should be doing....one particular hen is named Talker. I have had them since 2009 and am one of 7 breeders with a flock registered with the Wyandotte Breeders of America. I'm sure there are others who are not part of the WBA group. From where did you order your CW? The color variety is hard to maintain...but type is supposed to be a round basketball body with a broad back.
Here is Beauregard and a few of the young hens. I raised Beau from a chick born in 2012...he was a great rooster....true to the Standard.

My CW came from Cackle. 2 nice beefy ones. the other was a bit smaller, and she took a bit longer to develop her coloring. But, she was friendlier than the other 2. The CW will be part of my back bone mixed flock, crossed with my avatar EE roo or perhaps a BE to produce some sex links. So, I really don't care that they are hard to maintain as far as color goes.

I have one cherry tomato that is getting ripe. Harvested kale seeds out of green house the other day. They are drying on a sheet before I thresh them. Will use some for fall and spring crop, and sprout the rest for winter fun.
