What did you do in the garden today?

Didn't get much done in the garden yesterday - my knees were hurting so much I could hardly walk. They seem a lot better today (jinks - I'll be crawling by noon - lol). I did try to use up some of the zucchini, though. I made a zucchini cake with cream cheese frosting (after just telling you guys how little I bake these days!), and also used some for dinner, as well. When going through recipes, one person said they grate up their extra zucchini and freeze it so they can use it for baking throughout the winter. I thought that was brilliant! You mean I don't have to eat zucchini for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so that none of it gets wasted? :lau I think we're going to have a zucchini-grating party real soon!

I have a really good recipe for a lemon cake with zucchini.
We are getting a misty sprinkle this morning....hoping for more.
Had a new calf yesterday evening in the fall calving pasture....the cycle begins a little early!

Baby rabbit in the garden this morning...fully furred and fast enough to get away from Red. In his defense, Red is 9 and still recovering from the coyote attack 5 weeks ago.

We have buckets of Moonglow pears ready for processing so that's what I will do if it rains. If not, I'll work on pens and do pears this evening.

Did you see this one? I just looked it up and watched it.
14yr old DD watching her younger siblings for awhile last week sent me this message so I had to check it out.

Looks like the same chicken. The ladies with the chickens tried a duet for their second act...the Buff Columbian and a black mottled....they got buzzed out on the show.

We have been contemplating on starting with ducks recently. But we keep reading about them always digging as deep as their bill is long.. Another chore for us maybe? Still I am ready but hubby is the consciousness objector as always!
Husbands can be such wet blankets. I was talking about turkeys, when it occurred to him that he might get to eat one. Then it was fine.:D

What all do you do/make with your pears?

We got turkeys for the first time a few months ago (May, I think). I got 3 heritage Bronze turkeys. I got 3 because I have heard that you sometimes lose 1 and that turkeys do better with a friend. I also heard that it is good to start them in the brooder with a chick. The chick teaches the turkeys where to eat and drink and reminds them to do so! LOL All went well until a raccoon managed to reach through the coop I had just moved them to. We lost 1 turkey and another was severely injured. She has since recovered and is doing great! Then I bought 3 Broad Breasted Whites, they are like the Cornish Cross of the turkey world (from what I understand). All 3 of them are doing great. Turkeys have a lot of personality and I REALLY enjoy them. I was surprised. They like to follow me around and do really well at coming when called. I was told that the trick to that is to spend a lot of time with them when they are young. The one "bad" thing about them, well, 2 things, I guess, they like to try to "eat" your fingers, toes, clothes, shoelaces,..... and they POOP a lot! and it's way bigger than chicken poop! (like the size of chicken eggs!!!). So make sure you have plenty of room for them and a good system for keeping that area clean.

I picked an other gallon of raspberries. Freezing them until the mood strikes to make jam. I use Pomona's pectin so I do not have to use any more sugar than I want to use.

Working on sodding an area of lawn that had a load of loam dumped on it. The loam has all been distributed to fill in various craters (thank you chickens) and ruts left behind by trucks and such.

Today I went to the zoo. I did not work on the garden. But the zoo was pretty great. :) Our zoo is free on mondays.

Now, I just might go to the zoo, if it was free, and if it was near by, and would definitely go, if they would load my truck up with free poop from all the critters. I'd put the elephant dung over here... and I'd put the lion and tiger and bear dung around my garden, and I'd use the goat and deer and other such nuggets on the HK, and in the green house!

So here it is...
I went to the Doctor today. I told her I am suffering from Garden Envy! OMG.. She gave me a prescription and when I filled it, I had a pack of seeds! The instructions said enjoy in moderation and stop reading the "What did you do in the garden today blog"!
Whatever... I am gunna exploit them seeds and share my reap! The warning on the package said that gardening may be addictive. It's my life and I'll decide that for myself.. The nerve of some people. Geeeze!

That gave me a laugh. My previous Dr. used to hassle me every single year when I saw her. She wanted me to do a formal exercise program. I kept telling her that she just didn't understand. I do physical therapy for work. A lot of lifting and tugging there! And when not working, I'm gardening: doing all of the earth prep by hand, building stone walls, transporting yard after yard of wood chips via WB, truck, and manure fork, cutting trees, moving firewood, And using a pick axe to dig through concrete hard clay to plant trees. Who needs a gym membership??? Spend time exercising? You've gotta be kidding me. Why, even the act of harvesting is a work out: all of the bending, stretching and reaching in the garden jungle!!!

We have been contemplating on starting with ducks recently. But we keep reading about them always digging as deep as their bill is long.. Another chore for us maybe? Still I am ready but hubby is the consciousness objector as always!

I've done the duck thing. Enjoyed them for a season. They were fantastic slug patrol. Messy around their coop, but didn't damage the lawn, or the garden. (though they did trample and sample) However, I couldn't possible imagine keeping them through the winter. Would love to see a rent-a-duck program.

I have a good friend (without a farm) and (has a gym membership) we are besties. So we always tease each other! When I go shopping with her and she drives, she will circle the parking lot again and again looking for a close to the store spot. Of course I have to laugh and continuously bring the fact to her attention that "why do you pay big bucks for the gym when you could walk from the back of the parking lot"! Silly girl she is!
I tell her to come help me dig holes and chop firewood in the winter and I will charge her half of what the gym charges! :lau We are peas from a different pod but close friends!:)
