What did you do in the garden today?

actually I am going to cheat I found a metal shed 10 x 14 on the home depot site so am picking it up to replace my main coop adding a few widows and vents and a walk door not the double shown.. as they are accustomed to a dirt floor I will not put the floor in I use deep litter.

I hope you have shade because those metal sheds get hot in summer. We open our tool shed every day we are here just to cool it off in there.

image.jpg image.jpg Raining since last night. Plenty of water, but not blowing, so it's ok. Good time as far as the garden goes. Harvested a couple of cukes and tomatoes. And some bolted lettuce for the chicks.

Spent most of my time housekeeping and uploading photos to albums here on BYC. Still getting them organized, but I think got the things on I wanted. Privacy should be set to public, so y'all let me know if I messed it up please?

HE and I tarped over the henhouse roof. Already wet, but at least now it'll dry faster and we can work inside it some. Got wet raw lumber drying in the garage now too. Sun tries to peek out, then the sky clabbers up again and drips. Sooo, prolly not gettin' much gardening nor building done today.

What all do you do/make with your pears?
Pear preserves, pear butter, jelly, canned pears, pear pie, pearsauce (like applesauce) and dehydrated pear chips.

I need to make perches, a swing and put in the wood to hang the waterer from. They are still wasting feed so i am going to have to build a custom feeder. They waste more than they eat. Tomorrow i will go buy wheels and roofing metal. So excited to see it coming together!
My hanging waterer often gets unbalanced and drains so I use it outside on the ground. The hanging nipple waterer is just fine. For the feeder, a 1 X 2 inch mesh cover keeps the birds from raking out the feed and wasting it.

A lesson learned...
Since you are going to use the deep litter method, be sure to build a tall enough frame from pressure treated lumber to hold the deep litter and that keeps the metal above ground on the outside so it doesn't rust. There are safe PTL out there that don't have toxic chemicals.
Too many folks don't make enough room/depth to hold the amount of deep litter that will build up over the late fall to early spring months and have to clean out mid winter...not fun. Insulate, insulate, insulate. Either use liquid nails and styrofoam for the ceiling...or run wires stretched between screw eyes to support the insulation material.[/QUOTE]

You needed another day off after that heat stroke episode!:hugs

Couldn't get on yesterday....
Worked up pears and delivered buckets to some elderly neighbor's.
We brought Susie the calf home yesterday morning to care for her here. Momma cow was down and unable to get up. Wish the neighbor had put her down...she died this afternoon. He kept hoping she would get better because she would eat and drink water. I hated to think she suffered. Susie is adjusting and taking to the bottle, eats creep and does graze grass. She will be fine.

I'm going to have to make some difficult decisions....about options.
Neurologist is sending me for nerve testing in my arms to rule out carple tunnel before discussing degenerative disc solutions. I've put off fusion and plates with screws in my neck hoping new technology would be developed. I have four bad discs in my neck. Medicare won't pay for disc replacement due to cost although FDA has approved a synthetic replacement in 2012 and as od 2014 allows two to be done in one surgery. I've heard bad things about mobility and stress on discs above and below fused sites.
Keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

Picked tomatoes and okra today.

Today in the garden I went out too soon after my presumed heat exhaustion of yesterday and fell on my not-padded-quite-enough butt. Right where I was when I took that picture I just posted, by the teepee. But I didn't drop the cantaloupe! Second one of this season. I'm fine too. Took it relatively easy today. Still had to move the pullets twice, morning and evening. I think they are getting used to their rides in the huge dog crate. I know they are getting bigger and heavier. Told HE the henhouse MUST be functional before I have to use two kennels or make double trips with them all.

I was planning on selling my "extra" pullets this fall, but HE seems to think we might need to keep them. World events are troubling him. HE even said we might want to try keeping a rooster if a collar will keep one quiet enough! I haven't told him that keeping all 25 will mean we need a bigger henhouse and run. I already know we will need that. I want some Ayam Cemani birds. I want those bad. And some lavendar Orpingtons. And maybe some red and blue laced Wyandottes. I did tell him we'd need a place to pen meat birds away from the layers if he wants to try some next year. He said "OK, start thinking where that needs to be". I looked under the bed for alien pods, but nothing there besides our emergency supplies and a cat. That cat was born there, so I know she's not an alien pod person. Or alien pod feline.

I hear you on the heat exhaustion. I tend to go out and work until I'm so done in that I can barely make it into the house, then, contemplate whether I should lay down on the floor before I pass out. Usually a rest and a lot of liquid rejuvenate me.

I'm hoping that your arm issues are related to carpal tunnel. That is a much easier treatment than degenerative discs in the neck. PM to follow.
