What did you do in the garden today?

Comfortable clothes, yeah, right!!! Turned up a yellow jacket nest when moving my old stash of cardboard. They didn't like that! But, my little orange butterfly net came to the rescue. While yellow jackets were buzzing the cardboard, trying to figure out where their nest went, I dropped net over them, and stomped them. Have enough cardboard to do about 8 x 10 area. Can't get more until Wednesday.

What did I do in my garden of death today?
I ignored it! :lau
A few days ago we scored a pallet or so of veggies and fruit from a friend in the bizz.
Traded some to neighbouring farmers and fed our animals good for days...

SO TODAY I AM CHEATING using someone else's garden stuff!

I hand selected these plumb toms and counter top ripened them. Today I have been reducing them down, making tomato sauce. I am using my own grown basil so not cheating totally.
Been cleaning brooders most of this rainy day. Dodging rain and stirring tomatoes.
Amazing how a basket of plumb toms reduces down to a tiny bit of sauce!
I post more sauce pics shortly!
Nice reading all the posts and finally having something garden related to reply with!

It is now known as the TOMATO SAUCE SAGA..
I never did sauce in a crock pot before.. Always stove top. Cubed and dumped into my jumbo oval crock at about 1:30ish.. Photo taken 5 mins ago at 6:40ish..

Since then it only reduced less than an inch from the rim. It was overflowing and over filled to start.
Much longer than stove top cooking at equal time length. So I am going to leave the lid off for a short while to speed reduction.
Fixing to add my other ingredients but need more water to evaporate first. I don't what my fresh basil to evaporate too.
So the saga continues..

We shredded up a bunch of zucchini with our barrel grater and put it in freezer bags to freeze and use all winter to make muffins, cakes, etc. with. The zucchini is just coming too fast & furious that I can't keep up with it all. We could probably eat zucchini 3 times a day, and still have left over zucchini! We also have a bunch of tomatoes (mostly plums) to can. I'm planning to do diced tomatoes (both plain and a batch with basil, garlic, etc.). My son tried the first habaneros from the greenhouse today - said they were really hot (hotter than the ones from the grocery store). He is very pleased with them, since he likes things REALLY hot!

Our baby chicks are 3 weeks old today, and getting bigger fast. So cute! I'm not letting them out to free range for awhile yet, much to momma's dismay. Last year we let the babies out with Bertha at around 5-6 weeks, and a hawk killed one. So this batch is just going to have to stay in the pen till they get bigger. I am spoiling them with some treats though - their favorite seems to be blueberries so far.

I cook with our habaneros in our chili. I remove the seeds because they are like napalm! Yay on the chicks! Boo! On the hawk! Yum, on the shredded zucchini!

You must be a pepperhead like my son! I just can't handle much heat in my food - too whimpy, I guess.

So which way do you prefer to do your tomato sauce - stove top or crock? I've not tried using a crock pot for that, but sounds like a good idea. What other ingredients do you add to your sauce? Is it going to be like a spaghetti sauce or something similar?

Hope you do not mind my replying . Here is a list of spices I used . 2 tsp minced garlic dried ,1 tsp basil , 1 tsp minced onion dried , 1 tsp oregano , and 1/2 tsp fennel seed . 1/3 c vinegar plus 1 tsp salt . This is for 5 pints . I also used some pasta seasoning on another batch . By taste on that one as it was a large pot . Used the whole bottle actually . Plus salt and vinegar .

That's an incredible haul.

Today, I pulled poison ivy by hand until the deer flies started buzzing me. Have showered with liquid dawn, sent my clothes to the laundry room. Will wash them in bucket of hot water with soap and ammonia before they go into the washer. Tools have been scrubbed down with dawn. Next step, go out in comfortable clothes and get some layers of cardboard down over those spots, followed by leaves and wood chips. Those vines have traveled about 8', since I tackled that spot about 2 months ago.
It makes me shudder when you talk about PI, we have 13 acres and there is just so much of it!

Certainly don't mind! As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm planning to can a batch of diced tomatoes with basil & garlic, plus other Italian-type ingredients. I always love ideas from other cooks - thanks!
