What did you do in the garden today?

I mostly finished putting up the different fence around my veggie garden. I just have to finish up the "gate" and then get some test chooks out to see whether they will stay out.... :D I planted most of the other plants I bought the other day, I've only got 2 left to figure out where to put. I'm getting some bales of hay for mulch on the weekend. Hopefully everything will get a good start before summer hits. It was raining a lot today, I dig a hole to stick a plant in, and it's bone dry underneath. sigh. The joys of bassendean sand (the hideous water-repellant "soil" we've got here). I also want to get some sheep poo.

I've done NOTHING for years, it's nice to do a bit again. I used to like gardening before it all turned into a jungle.

Ah, so you're just entering summer there on your part of the globe? How long is your growing season there? Here the summer has gone way too fast. It's already cooling off where I live, but still plenty of time to grow more cool-weather crops. Gardeners never want to quit, right?

Maybe you can add some goodies to your soil to make it less water-repellent.

No, start of spring. Still a few months before it gets super-hot. I'm not planting any veggies other than herbs, because I get veggies in exchange for eggs. Just ornamentals. Oh, except for a lemon tree. I want a lemon tree.
Yes, you can improve the soil, but I just dug up a bit of the backyard not previously planted in. Some mulch and poo and it'll improve.

We were back to watering this week but expecting rain tonight. So today after picking okra and eggplant, I'll be back to working on putting a top on the chicken runs....the starlings have eaten a boat load of feed this year....really affects my bottom line.
Susie the calf has a companion in the lot. One of our thinner cows had to have her feet trimmed when she came back from pasture. Her calf is being weaned and she is in the lot with Susie so we can monitor her health. She is role modeling good grazing behavior and cube consumption. Kicks Susie off when she tries to nurse, but doesn't hurt her.
Saw a Road runner in the drive yesterday....haven't seen one in several years.

guess have not seen them up here?
Moth for sure.
Weird on marigolds not working. Works so well here I'll never plant a tomato without them.
View attachment 1125510 This critter hung around for several weeks. Something was definitely wrong with it as it never really flew.
It is a variety of a IO moth.

I smash these moths when I find them hanging out in my barn.. They are a gift from Satan.

Don't you just hate when the birds get at your chicken feed? Here, the sparrows help themselves to our chicken feed everyday. When I kept it in the coop, they went inside to eat (sometimes a dozen or more at a time!), so I moved it out into the yard, but they eventually found it there, too. There seems to be nowhere I can put it to keep them out. I'm sure they are eating a good portion of it, and it makes me mad that we're spending so much money feeding the sparrows (which I hate, because they take food and nesting areas from the native species). :he
