I buy a plain top soil but use miracle grow an ak fish fertilizer

My "go to" seedling mix is Pr0-Mix with microrhizae

I have not seen that here.

I started these in those peat pellets, jiffy i think they are called. Had to repot in plastic pots because the roots were growing out the sides.

I have not seen that here.

I like it b/c it is much less prone to damping off b/c of the microrhizae. A single bale will usually last me for 2 years, so... I think the cost of it is well justified. If it's not carried locally, your feed/garden center should be able to get it for you. It's everywhere here.

We have 40 different soils to choose from and I buy the basic because between the compost aged chicken poo and Alaska fish fertilizer or miracle grow mine do not normally fail

I posted this on another thread, but thought it applied here as well.
We are always looking for ways to recycle and repurpose. We have been saving plastic berry containers for the day we could find a use for them. Over the winter we started sprouting oats and wheat for the flock (and us) in them and they work perfectly. We had been using sprouting trays before and they were messy and had too much waste. These are a one day serving and all the chaff flushes out of the container when watered. We also use mason jars with screen lids as starters and then dump them into the plastic berry containers to continue sprouting. This is probably not a new idea, but haven't seen it before.

I hate peat pots. The few times I've used them, they get moldy, and if I restrict water to prevent that, the soil dries out completely. Nothing but styrofoam cups, plastic cups/pots and plastic 6 packs here.

I mentioned before that we scavenge the local nurseries for used black plastic pots sizes 1 gal-15 gal to do some container gardening or start trees and such. We'll also pick up the used black trays with the little square pots to start our flowers and veggies. They work great, are easy to transplant, and best of all they are repurposed and free!

I planted my Brandywines, some more marigolds and my kohlrabi. Also starting taking down the tarps I have up for wind breaks on the barn. Hope to take down the clear plastic over the next couple of days.
