What did you do in the garden today?

The cages we use are pretty decent, but I have seen tomato plants grow so vigorously that the cage comes up out of the dirt. Ours are made from heavier cattle panel, and have straight sides instead of being funnel shaped. Funnel shaped ones don't stand up to our windy conditions at all. I think that's why I always see them junked on people's curbs on trash day. I live in Tornado Alley, so staking cages is highly recommended anyway. I just found that out myself.

I found some beautiful soil in my compost when I reassembled the pile today. The mesquite branches are breaking down nicely. I can break them with my hands now :woot

Well already have steel fence posts in for the fence. But I would have no way of getting a hold of cattle panel. But when I started looking it up I saw a lot of ideas and how it works so I’m sure I can make something.
Just went to the local nursery and got some seeds for some beneficial plants that I’ve had a hard time finding. Yarrow, milk thistle, bee balm, catmint and nettle. When I was there I actually found a tickseed plant. And extremely close friend I mean where we knew each other for over 20 years used to pick these tickseed flowers because they grow like wildfire in our area. When she would come over in late July or early August when they were blooming she would always flowers for all her close friends. And I finally found out what they were called and finally finally found the plant. All the other plants are very beneficial for getting rid of bad bugs in bringing in good bugs but I think the Tickseed plant brings in some extra love

And this is the composter I'm getting for free. I've read a few reviews, they're so so. Since it's free and my husband can fix pretty much anything, we're going to have my son drag it over here this weekend.

pretty cool find we are old school do have one plastic barrel turned into a compost

Just curious but if you guys don’t use tomato cages how do you support your tomatoes? I really don’t like tomato cages because I’m having to constantly stake them because the weight of the tomatoes always take them down. I don’t have anymore welded wire fabric to make sturdier ones and I hate spending money. What do you guys use?

we user the grden fence to tie the cages

Well my peas in that I sowed into the lengths of guttering hanging in my poly tunnel have all come through really nicely with no pest issues like slugs or rodents and two lots of cherry tomato seed have germinated really well. Sadly only a couple of Aubergine and no peppers so far but I'm hoping they are just slow to germinate. I've sown lemon cucumber and leeks and courgettes and perpetual spinach and some different tomato varieties in the last few days, so fingers crossed for those. I've still got big patches of garden to dig over and try to eliminate some of the really invasive weeds and I must get some potatoes in and of course we are now into lawn mowing season so that takes up rather more time than I would like!

Here are my hanging peas....

In another few days I will make a shallow trench in the garden, carry the lengths of guttering out to it and slide/push them out of the guttering into the trench in one long row, gently firm them in and cover with a cloche.... that's the theory anyway. It has been cooking in the poly tunnel the past few days, but we are set to have a cooler wet spell again next week just when I want to get them out there.... typical!

I have a bucket that I put stuff in from the kitchen for sheet composting but I have an old school pile working too.
