What did you do in the garden today?

I have access to both a small and bigger tiller perk of bf being athletics facility manager at local college he’s in charge of grounds among many other things...so just till it up? Will stuff still come up that’s been there for years? And it would be like all over in different spots right? I mean rn it’s overgrown and everywhere but there is some pattern to it..

nope use a small one or hands around the plants to keep major tiller on other places are rows still evident we have some great folks in your area also hoping they will chime in

I would say no to the rows it’s all just kinda there pretty thick..I can take pics later tho you’ll have to excuse some of the trash like I said people here before let everything go and have trash piles and trash scattered thru yard weather ain’t helped none..hoping get out there this weekend work more on the trash issue it’s just been so wet and windy ugg..gonna get what can tho and probably be a muddy mess lol

Gives them time to chime in also that way photos are great we moved here almost 6 years ago tried to till did awful trying to keep it weeded was awful without a laundry list garden is now in tires stacked three high old tires are free mix chicken in with it great growing recently bought 6 grow bags for potato from amazon

@penny1960 like the potato bags!! We’re making boxes that can take boards down to harvest different layers etc..just take when need..just another thing for bf to build but he’s pretty handy at that stuff lol..

Hi @AngieMaesChix. Last Spring and summer (my first year here in this house) I observed what grew up in the pre-existing gardens. I had two overgrown house eating shrubs removed from the front of the house. This year I know what else is getting removed or heavily pruned back. I don't spend too much time on flowers, I prefer to work on the vegetable gardens. I chose to build raised beds because I'm already old and raised beds are easier to maintain especially for seniors. I have 4 - 4ft x 8 ft beds and 1 round 4ft bed. I will be adding one 3ft x 4ft bed for leeks and three large containers for potatoes and carrots. I either froze or canned my harvest from last year and most of that is gone except for a few more pounds of butternut squash, some pickles and a lot of tomato sauce. Oh, I still have jalapeno and poblano peppers in the freezer as well. Yum! I'm hoping to process more vegetables that will see me through next winter. I really don't like the produce from the grocery stores. So many recalls for e coli, listeria and salmonella not my favorite side dish. Here's the vegetable garden from last year. I prefer my own home grown eggs as well. I like to know where my food comes from. The shed in this picture is the potting shed. No chickens allowed in this part of the yard.

Hello all never jumped into this thread but figure it’s time...so far I got seeds going for Roma’s , Beefsteak and Cherry Tomatoes...some habaneros and morning glories and English lilac...next few weeks gonna be pretty busy between incubating starting plants and getting the garden filled n ready to go...we just moved to a place out in the sticks with land old farmhouse..needs some tlc but I love it!!! There’s already a garden that been growing wild for years and years plan to clean it out and starting another on a different little plot...pretty excited!! Starting to incubate chickens barred rocks for now got first batch today is day seven...down to nine eggs set fingers crossed I’d like at least five outta this batch..I’ll be setting another right after..couple more weeks and I can start a bunch more seeds..so thankful spring is amongst us I live in NW Ohio and winters been horrid!! By the way I’m AngieMae I’ll be 41 end of this month I have four children all of whom are grown but for my 16 yr old who lives with his father now..and finally being able to start living out my dream of homesteading it’s been a lifelong dream of mine and it’s actually happening now!! Starting off slow getting property right and clean god the amount of junk and trash left behind uggg starting with the gardens and chickens by end of summer I want a good strong flock of chickens maybe two...some ducks and were thinking of getting a feeder pig to throw an end of summer bash hog roast...and possibly a horse for me this year..also starting a mealworm farm in next few weeks...by next spring I want to be able to have two strong flocks , ducks,few goats, maybe some turkeys , and a few hogs...and maybe a bee hive or two though I must admit bees intimidate me tho I love fresh honey and it sells well around my area..thinking of trying to find a class in bee raising...I was raised country for the most part and know a lot but I have way too much to learn!! Anyways wanted to jump in say hello and introduce myself and tell a little bit about what brings me here!! I do have some questions I’ve never dealt with a wild overgrown garden before...what’s my best way to proceed?? I was thinking can I just burn off the old crap to start with?? There’s tons of dead overgrowth and stalks etc everywhere!! It’s a pretty good sized garden has tons of tomatoes, peppers and there’s corn squash etc...should I still till it up some or should I just burn it then see what comes up? I always mulch my garden though I’m not sure how to go about this not knowing really where anything is it going to come up at..I’ve always had maintained gardens that I pretty much restart every year aside from asparagus and stuff like that...I want to keep it and get it clean and whatnot I know I’m gonna have to thin it out plants were so close together..there’s also some wild grape vines I’d like to keep but I don’t like their location when would be the best time to transplant these to another location think I want them by the fence rails which is still a nice sunny location and also would have support..I just never have dealt with grapes let alone transplant them..I don’t wanna lose em..thank you and sorry for the long post lol

WOW! You’ve got allot going on. If it were me I’d start with identifying what was growing in the garden. I’d do a good clean up. Some may be perennials that you want to keep. To transplant the grapes do it when any threat of frost has past. But..I’d look at where they’ve been growing. Are they thriving? Are they in a good spot for them?

Gonna go out and take some here soon I forgot to add were also right on the river thats awesome we both love to fish and kayak canoe n camp and it’s all right here!! It’s a bit run down and we have a lot of work to do but be well worth it once done!!

OH I would NOT till an unknown mess under. You disturb the natural layers and biome and you are tilling IN any weeds. I agree with heavy mulching and clean soil AFTER you figure out what's in there (if you want) I'd just start from scratch.

I rolled my fig tree back into the garage after giving it a bit of sun. I had this crazy idea to shovel the snow away from the main gate leading to the garden. I shoveled maybe 3 inches of slush off the top of 6 inches of ice. Perhaps that will help it to melt some more. I planted poblano seeds. I tried to make little tags for the seedlings but I ran out of toner. I ordered plastic plant tags from Amazon. I'm afraid to plant anything else before I get them tagged or I will lose track of what is what. They should be here tomorrow so I can get more seeds into the dirt.

So I should just clean it out best I can and see what comes up?? I know there’s some good stuff in there bf seen it at the end of year last year...peppers tomatoes he said there’s a ton of cherry tomatoes...I guess I’ll just clean it up a bit and see what comes as we go..The grapes seem to do fine where they are but I don’t want them in front of the old pickup that’s there for decoration and will be putting flowers out there and that’s mainly where any flowers I have will be...I have a nice spot picked I think they would do well ..I figure transplant them right before I plant my flowers so probably early mid May ...
