What did you do in the garden today?

My Daffodils are up after a couple 60 degree days and Hyacinths are soon to follow.
Your daffodils are lovely. I am so jealous. With all the flowers and shrubs the previous homeowner had planted, not one daffodil. I bought a bunch of bulbs last Fall but was not able to get them planted. Next year they will be in the ground even if I have to pay someone to do it. The contractor left. The house is finally quiet. He opened the wall between my sunroom and dining room. Only some finishing touches but it looks amazing.

My seed potatoes came in today!
I have never planted potatoes in garden, but grandfather did in his farm, with the help of horse and plow.
He used the potatoes he harvested the year before.
Would you not be able to just go with grocery store potatoes.???
I am kind of tempted to container grow a few Yukon gold.
Last year I planted a sweet potato in a pot. Just for fun BTW. Nothing sprouted:hit... I gave it enough time, and then just threw it into compost area.

I don't have a GREEN THUMB... unless I'm painting, :gig,,, But just wanted to share my daffodil experience. (also tulip at same time)
I planted them in the spring. The store had them on sale, so I got a bag of each. They did come up and grew, but did not bloom that year. Following Spring, they did, and have done so for about 25 years now. They do not seem to multiply very well on their own. I think they need to be dug up, and bulbs separated, and replanted. :idunno
They are growing in firm soil that has other things (bushes) growing in between. The soil does not get turned/cultivated.

No, well, I mean you CAN but it doesn't end well. Most grocery store potatoes are sprayed with chemicals that inhibit sprouting and foliage growth from the root up to keep them from growing while sitting on a shelf. As you can imagine that gets in the way of planting them. Even if they grow a plant they often never grow a crop of potatoes.
They're also normally stored slightly differently if I'm not crazy.
But you can buy seed potatoes from a lot of places, or if you can find some untreated that works too.

Sweet potatoes aren't actually the same family as a regular potato... They have very different growing requirements and are more of a vine.

The spraying to prevent sprouting makes sense now. I actually did encounter some sprouts on potatoes purchased at grocery store. Must have been those that missed some of the spraying. I don't want just any potato,,, sort of wanted a Yukon Gold. And for fun more than anything. Don't want to go too far out of my way to find a seed potato. I just might try one out of the bag. It will be container grown, and if there is no harvest,,,, its fine. A potato growing on my patio makes for a nice conversation piece.:)

Well, it isn't a 100% effective spray or the potato would just die. But it's effective enough to severely retard growth and prevent good harvests.
You can get yukon gold seed potatoes from all over the place, they're very popular. Even box stores like HD carry them sometimes.
This is where I got my viking seed potatoes from and they yukon golds too.
