What did you do in the garden today?

Snaps from the yard today. The lemon tree has been buzzing with bees. The aloe that's blooming is in the compost pile. Those the chickens are chilling next to were planted last fall. I cleared two huge clumps to plant the hibiscus and the yellow bell shaped things in their place. Aloe with a good layer of composted mulch is wonderful for breaking up hard soil here.

Very pretty plants. I see somebody's toes. PEEKABOO!!!

Got the patio done over the week

The Musa Basjoo banana plants that we got last year have survived our cold wet Irish winter.

Today I set up my second 4' lamp/heatmat combo on my PVC/plywood shelf. I moved my herbs and flower tray onto that shelf along with the celery. My peppers are coming up well and I replanted some of my tomato cells with new seeds. Disappointingly a bunch of my tomatoes from SeedsNSuch had bad germination rates. The Indigo Rose were particularly disappointing. Surprisingly my Brad's Atomic Grape came up the best followed by my Roma paste from High Mowing. Almost all the cells on both of those came up well. Also disappointed by the Defiant germination rate... With 5 seeds I was hoping for 4 plants and got 2. Given how expensive they are I was pretty bummed.

Have you tried cloning plants you get poor germination on? I always put down at least a couple cuttings from any tomatoes I only have one or two plants of.

Didn't manage anything yesterday as we never made it above freezing and the winds were rocking at 35-40mph. I tried to get work in the barn done, but I was freezing!

Today is much better. I have a couple of stall walls to move, to change the stall configuration. I am hoping the wind doesn't shift too much as I have an idiot "neighbor" in full swing this morning. They put their place on the market, and moved to the city to downsize. So he's out today BURNING crap from his workshop. It's just RUDE to burn when you blow into a neighbors house. It's just against the country way. He's only 200 yards from his nearest neighbor and it's blowing right into the house. To make things worse, he's burning PLASTIC!!! Old oil bottles, water bottles, hydrolic fluid bottles. GEESH. our landfill takes them for free as hazardous waste. HE** The country garbage collectors will take them with the weekly stuff. And he's STANDING over the burn barrel! HE"S breathing burning chemicals and plastic! Idiot.

DH just hollered "you can't fix stupid".

I determined I didn't like the bee hive at the far end of the pasture. I'd never check on it down there, and I plain didn't like the look of it. Plus the whole security thing.

I moved it up by the house, but far enough away it won't bother porch users or us walking in and out of the lower door. It's 20 feet from either. It will get morning sun, and warm sun until about 2, then it is shaded from the full blast of

the day. It is protected from winter winds and snow, but has cross breezes in the summer. It is next to the wysteria vine and a shallow stone filled bird bath. So I think it will be fine. Doesn't matter, as I'm not moving it again. Occupants come in a month. (OH and I AM painting that green menards bucket today. I figured it would be easier to paint over green than white. I MIGHT see if I can find a clay pot to put it in. It's full of concrete with sunk hooks for extra weight, just in case. Our winds can funnel through here at an alarming rate.

I'm waiting for it to warm up a few more degrees before I go out. I've just finished my leather viking pouch for my belt. Last week I made my leather scabbard for my weaving knife. I think that's the last bit of my kit I need to make. Oh no, wait, I still need to make my headscarf/wrap. I haven't designed that one yet. I think it's just going to be strips on linen, muslin that I can use as a shawl/hair wrap. Still pondering. My hair isn't long enough to braid or put up.
