We think that our only killed hen so far was done by a bird of prey. Our heelers set on big birds now, even vultures, and chase them around the property until they go back over the fence. I think they instinctively know.
Oh, I have flying predators as well but they aren't a problem in the garden. The big pine tree across the street in my neighbor's front yard is the nesting place of choice for a healthy pair of hawks. Not positive what but very large.
