What did you do in the garden today?

Seed potatoes. All the seed potatoes are sold out for the season and no more coming. Bizarre. They said, "just buy some at the grocery store and sprout them." Said nobody in the area has them. Hmm. So next year I'm stocking up on them when it's still 2 months too early to plant instead of just 1 month.

That is weird! We have tons of them at our farm store, and at the local mom and pop produce/seed store. I did sprout some leftover organic potatoes from the store last year and they actually did better than the seed starters I bought.

My 2nd year apple trees have wooly aphids! Ugh! I sprayed them all off with the garden hose, but they came back again in 2 days.

I really hate using harsh chemicals, and the trees are tall enough now that I can't reach the tops, which is probably why they came back...didn't get them all off to begin with.

Any suggestions? I have thought about picking up some ladybugs, as they would have a feast, but I know they don't stick around and are not guaranteed.

I found this last year when I found bugs on my fruit trees: Fungicide3 by Garden Safe. Totally organic. It's a fungicide, insecticide and miticide. It's an extract of neem oil. It worked really well.

HAPPY EARTH DAY! My seedlings made it through the first night without getting snacked on. Yay! I charged the batteries on my drills and will be finishing off that raised bed shortly. I have one more raised bed to put together in the main garden, then I can get the herb & flower gardens put together. Those are going into my backyard. Filling them all with dirt is the hardest part. Lots of good exercise. :bow

G'morning gardeners:frow

Today I have 12 chicks going outside to the mini coop after work. Temps are still mild but the heat is coming :sick. I'll be getting things ready on my breaks and lunch but there's not much to get done as it's ready for the most part.

Happy Earth Day everyone, have a good one!

This isn't technically gardening, but my kids and I are trying to save a pine tree in the front yard. It fits with Earth day, right?
The tree is about 20 feet tall, but honeysuckle has smothered it. Last year (our first year here), I cut all the vines at ground level to kill the vines in the tree. Or so I thought. This year it came back stronger than ever, so we went out today and attacked it from below ground. We can't put chemicals on it as it would harm the tree, since the roots are wrapped around the tree roots. My kids cut vines and helped pull them up. I dug up roots and finally found the source. The root ball was as big as a small tree! I couldn't get the taproot out, as it was too deep and almost under the pine tree trunk, but I cut away at it as best I could and cut all the runners. Then we pulled up as many as we could.

I am crossing my fingers that the tree comes back!
