Ew, those are awful. I have been bitten by them before. There were several of them out today when we were picking blackberries.
So what is a kissing bug? Anyone have a picture? I guess I could try Googling it. I didn't do anything in the garden today. I taught Summer school and then picked up my Granddaughter. She will be 2 tomorrow. She played in her kiddie pool by the garden and when she was done I dumped the water on the garden. She won't be here over the weekend ( I'm going to go see Willie Nelson in concert on Saturday) and I don't want to breed mosquitoes.
We are suppose to have almost of week of dry weather!! Maybe all of the chicken yard will dry out and the awful gnats will go away!!

Good morning gardeners. Today is supposed to be hotter than yesterday. I feel lucky that I only ran the AC for around 2 hours early yesterday evening then was able to switch back to fans. Nothing much happening in the garden, everything is growing. The pole beans are climbing and responding nicely to the heat. I think they were just a bit water logged. The jalapeno plant is loaded with blooms so I anticipate having some spicy peppers to heat up the salad greens. The majority of the mowing is done, just need to do some trimming with the weed whacker. Have a great day everyone.

G'morning gardeners :frow

I watered a few things including the oleander that's struggling. Temps are 110 or so the next 3 days. Have the fan on for the coop already and the mister is ready to turn on mid morning. That combo keeps the coop at least 10 degrees cooler than outside and the birds congregate in front of the coop door to keep cool.

Have a great day all

spiders - ick, but if they are outside, at least that is where they are supposed to be. Dry areas seem to have more, but maybe just less cover for them to hide under. Visiting relatives in E WA (high dry desert), and was on the deck while BIL was taking down the little tent he had slept in (placed on top of a tarp) further away, near some trees. I'm fairly far away and on a 2nd story deck. He picks up and shakes out the tent to get rid of debris. All of a sudden, a ginormous spider falls out and scurries across the tarp. BIL jumps back and all of us on the deck pull in a collective gasp - it was so large that even the older (more vision challenged) were able to see that spider from that far away!!! BIL stood there for a few moments scanning the ground and more cautiously looking in the tent. We all start to laugh bc we all wondered if he had had a sleeping buddy all night in the form of an 8-legged creature. Ick!

Here is a potato "fruit" = a seed case, I suppose. This year only one type of potato flowered - the other potato has not flowered. I looked it up, and apparently there are some types of potatoes that do not flower. This one did and left its little fruit. Nope - not going to eat it - pretty sure it would be toxic, since the potato plant itself is toxic.

They are also called assassin bugs. They got the name kissing bug because they will bite your face and lips while you sleep. It isn't very common anymore for that to happen as most people treat their houses with spray. They are usually active at night, as they are noctural, but you can find them in dense bushes and brush during the day. Ugh. They are awful. The few times I was bit was when I was a teen, and was out hiking in the woods, and disturbed them in the brush. One got between my skin and shirt.

WIND!!
All right all ready!
By 10:00 it’s goin’ pretty good doesn’t stop till the sun is down. Did weeding and watering this morning.
Grapes & Raspberries are setting fruit ... I’ve lost so many blossoms and flowers.
I think I cut my berries back too far (Small bushes) they’re not even 1/2 the size they were this time last year.

I can’t believe I’m still getting asparagus spears I won’t cut these I’ll let them fern out.
