What did you do in the garden today?

Speaking of curled leaves. My Caan plant is getting ready to bloom. It’s leaves naturally come out as long curled tubes. This year something laid eggs in a majority of it’s leaves. I couldn’t unroll and squish the caterpillars ... so I filled the leaves with water and squished the leaves. It worked! All in all I killed about 10. What ever they were my chickens wouldn’t eat them.
This plant takes leaf trimming well. In fact they encourage trimming.
The blooms are gorgeous when in full swing. The Coral color of its flowers (to me) is stunning. I can’t have them out back as they are poisonous to chickens.
I’ll trim and feed this beauty.
Looks delicate but this is its third year. It’s a hardy plant to make it here.
Hope everyone has a good day. Happy Gardening :frow

Got the peas strung up and a ladder for the cucumbers finished yesterday. Today, moving more wood chips! Of the 3 yards that arrived, I have one yard moved to a pile to age for the chickens. Another yard hauled up the hill with many tractor trips to add to the berms I created with used Christmas trees and rotting logs. The last - most of it’s already on the gardens, and now moving wheelbarrow loads onto the part of the hill that is soggy clay. I read that years of mulching with organic stuff can eventually make the clay drain better.

Cleaning up for family visiting on 7/5 to 7/8. But while the sun is out I seem to just do outdoor chores!

Today I will be adding some twine to my watermelon and pumpkin plants to get them started upward. Then we'll get some more dirt for our berry garden and then mulch.

And probably spend some time with the chickens and ducks, since we just got back from vacation. Happy gardening!
Hope your vacation was a blast!
I would just love to see how your vertical watermelon & pumpkins do. Could you post pictures when the time is right? :fl

It was fun!
I will post more pictures when they start fruiting. The pumpkins are just now flowering. I over planted because I didn't think all of the seeds would take, and well, the pumpkins are a bit crowded. May have to let some grow on the ground. The chickens killed off several of the watermelon and sunflowers, as they decided to eat the plants or make a dirt bath in the garden.

I couldn't find any twine but stumbled on a bunch of bamboo sticks in the yard so I got them started vertical.

I couldn’t hate it any more.

local ice cream store website to find out what their daily flavors will be in July
Did the ice cream shop carry New York Cherry flavor. That one is kind of difficult to find in my area. I can find it, but do need to go out of my way for it. Seems only one brand makes it around here.:idunno Baldwin, and many stores do not carry that brand/line.

I dead headed the blossoms on my Basil today that I have planted in containers on my deck. We had a brief downpour with a thunder storm earlier this afternoon and I dashed out afterwards to pull weeds in my flower beds while the ground was still wet from the rain.

My garden has suffered due to the heavy rains and cold spring we suffered this year. My potatoes are not blooming and I lost 2/3rds of my onions to rot. Pole beans that I planted are stunted and yellow. On the other hand, I planted pole beans, container sweet corn, green peppers hot peppers and a tomato plant along with basil and other herbs in containers that I have scattered around our deck and porches and they are doing marvelous.

This will be the last year that I plant an 'in ground' garden. Next year I will be doing 100% container planting, thanks to the success (so far) of my container plants and my growing problems with my joints. It is just so convenient to walk out the door, weed the containers when necessary and water/fertilize. I've even started a mint garden where I usually plant flowers that can grow to it's hearts content and I shouldn't have to worry too much about it once it gets started as I can simply mow off the excess growth!

No. Actually, now that you mention it, cherry flavor isn’t very popular here. It seems that when I lived on E coast, cherry was a more prevalent flavor...I’m guessing it’s popular in MI, as well!

It was Deep Woods with Picaridin. It is funny, because I bought that one because picaridin is not supposed to cause health concerns like deet. I had never used it before, and will not be using it again!
HUH. Deep woods gives me the shakes. Most with DEET do. But that's what keeps the ticks away. I've given up with the mosquitoes and biting flies, and pirate bugs. Nothing works.

Adding in..I do try to spray my clothing instead of me.
