What did you do in the garden today?

Didn't do anything in the garden today. I mowed for 3 hours forgetting my sunscreen, d'OH! and seal the concrete on the front walk, two coats. (I still have the back 50 foot long sidewalk to do, but it will have to wait for 12 hours of no rain.) So all told 12 hours in the outdoors today.

I'll pick more tomatoes tomorrow. Still not enough to do anything WITH, but more than we can eat. I think I'll skin them and sauce them for freezer pizza sauce.

The neighbors brought their grands over today to see the alpacas. Well behaved children. THAT was nice for a change.

And good kids are such a pleasure! I only had one, but she was easy to raise. I got lucky! I rarely had to correct her and I can’t even remember ever punishing her. She is a delight to this day, and her sweet little daughter is, too!

I took photos in the garden today. Maybe I can get a couple to upload if I say the magic words!

Wow, uploading is a breeze tonight. Probably because it’s midnight! I added one of The Silly Girls.

LOVE seeing your girls frolic in the grass. That was the image I had in my head when we got chickens but it took NO time for the hawks to get a bead on them. One day I went out to let the chickens out and the hawk was sitting on a nearby branch just waiting for his moment.

I picked my first zucchini this morning. We had it for dinner.

And my very good news is that my garden made it through 105˚ temperatures today when I was out all afternoon. HOORAY!

You can see this squirrel getting into my wife's wild bird feeder. Aw, so cute. What you can't see, below the squirrel, is my wife's eggplant that was really growing good and had a number of nice small eggplants coming in this year. Unfortunately, the squirrel took all the eggplants and there is nothing left. Now my wife wants to shoot the squirrel. Not so cute. My wife really felt bad about losing all her eggplants. I did not know that squirrels liked eggplants or I would have suggested putting a wire cage around the plant. The squirrel has not bothered my beans or Swiss Chard which I also have growing out on the deck. Live and learn. No eggplants this year for us.

Morning gardeners! I didn't do much yesterday, but grabbed a shot of my first Dahlia of the season. The pic does no justice to the actual color.

@Wee Farmer Sarah cherry tomato & corn salsa sounds like such a good idea! I don't like cherry tomatoes (but I love salsa) and I have so many of them - I'll have to google & see if I can find a recipe. (eta: found the ball recipe - yay!)

@gtaus we have too many bear around here to feed the birds (or squirrels, lol) in the summer. The DEEP are constantly begging people to take their feeders down once they come out of hibernation. As they say, 'a fed bear is a dead bear'. When they break into a house or spend too much time bothering people they can't relocate, they have to euthanize.

Good morning gardeners. The weather here has been rather nice lately. Not too hot and breezy at times. I picked some cucumbers, the bell pepper and more cherry tomatoes this morning. There are more of the larger tomatoes almost ready to pick so that's encouraging. I think removing the summer squash from the bed next to the butternut squash was a good idea. There are several more baby butternuts emerging. This weekend I'm planning on making another batch of pickles and a batch of salsa. So much to do. I still need to chip away at cleaning the garage so I'll be ready for the wood pellet delivery. Have a great day everyone.

Your dahlia is beautiful. And yes the recipe for cherry tomato salsa is from my Ball canning cookbook. I had planted one cherry tomato plant early in the Spring, but I thought it was pretty much dead so I planted another. Those two tomato plants got huge so now what do you do with all those little round balls? I hope your salsa turns out well. I use it mostly when making Spanish rice. Oh, and regarding the bears in Connecticut: There is more news about bears in Connecticut than around here. I have bird feeders in my yard (they came with the house) but I only fill them after Yogi and friends go back into their dens. I've seen just about all the wildlife there is in this area except for the bears, foxes and moose. I'm OK with that.

You are just full of good ideas for me!! Spanish rice with the salsa! I'm going to try & do a few jars this weekend, maybe a half recipe.

We had a bear walk into a package store (liquor store for those non-nutmeggers, lol) in the middle of town. Thankfully they had a breezeway, if you will, & a worker was quick enough to lock the 2nd door so it didn't get all the way in. The idea of a bear shopping at the packy cracked me up.:lau
