What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. Sounds like you are feeling a bit better @penny1960. I watered the garden yesterday (only the part that still has vegetables growing). It hasn't rained for about a week now and despite the low temps last week it was in the mid 80's yesterday. They're calling for more warmth today and tomorrow. I picked a few more green beans and two cucumbers this morning. Yesterday while the chickens were in my backyard I grabbed a handful of cherry tomatoes from the garden and tossed it to them. They went crazy over them. I made the trip to my favorite orchard yesterday and picked up 10 lbs. of apples and some fresh apple cider. I will likely make the apple and cranberry jam tomorrow. Groundhogs - OMG! We have some wicked big ones around here, like around the size of a beagle or small cocker spaniel. I pretty much leave them alone @igorsMistress unless like on the occasion they tunnel up into the vegetable garden. Then I fill in the entrance to the hole with sticks and rocks then run some water into the hole. They have a very large wooded area to roam so the water down the hole convinces them to go in a different direction. I don't want to harm them as there is plenty of habitat for us to coexist. Although it attacked and munched on my garden in early Spring, everything pretty much bounced back. So no real harm done. The local Alpaca farm is having an open house at the end of this month @WthrLady, so weather permitting I'm thinking about checking it out. Have a great day everyone and keep on canning.

I understand not killing them if you have the space, I try to avoid killing anything but rats if I can.

We were overrun with gophers one year when the field behind our house was tilled and they left dirt mounds all over my yard and destroyed the garden along with our neighbors garden. The dogs hunted them but they just inundated us really badly.

View attachment 1915340 The city library holds an annual library fundraising book sale. The thing IS HUGE. They sell paperbacks for 1$ and hardbacks for $2 and kiddie books for 50 cents....CDs, records, old magazines, you name it. (OLD or rare books are priced separately). Anyway, last year they raised 70,000$ if that gives you an idea of how insane this sale is. Near the end of the third day it's fill a box for $5.

Anyway I was there on opening day, like usual, for awesome selection. These are books that aren't being checked out for years, or donations the library doesn't want. I scored on some watercolor books for my niece and some gardening books for me! (PLUS tons more books for me).

Holler if you want me lo look anything up !

Our library does a fundraiser sale also! I love it, usually find a lot of great books for the kids and I.

It has been soooooo dry here for the summer :hit the front lawn is crispy brown...the backyard has fared much better, only because of constantly running the hose to fill water buckets and the duck pool.

Most of my plants are established perennials, so I do spend some time watering them as well, but they've actually fared really well.

Today, I spent my day doing some outdoor fall decorating- in the front yard, away from my backyard plant eaters. :barnie

Good morning gardeners. Slow start today. It was really warm yesterday and last night was the first night in about two weeks it was warm enough to keep the windows open overnight. The blinds kept blowing with the breeze and the "noise" kept waking me up. I need to start working on cleaning some of my garden beds and getting them ready for winter. Welcome to the thread @DiYMama540, your Autumn décor looks great. I have to be careful what I put outside in my area. Last year the pumpkin I put out was consumed by some night time critter over the course of 3 days. Fortunately they had the decency to wait until after Halloween. LOL! I think the warm temps (low 70's) will last for another week or two so my remaining peppers have time to mature as well as the few green beans I've been getting. The ground hog isn't too big of a problem so far @igorsMistress. However, I understand on your farm it could cause some serious damage. Right now I'm concerned with the number of chipmunk holes that have been emerging along the edge of my retaining wall in the backyard. They are spaced at approximately 24 inch intervals. The wall needs to be re-set as it is leaning. Perhaps my little "Chippy" is trying to give me a hand by doing some excavating for me. We'll see what happens. Cold, snowy winter coming judging by the acorns. There are so many on the ground around the chicken coop it's a little hard to walk. Have a great day everyone.

Nice score! I will have to see if I can find the tonic one, seems like it would be interesting.

Very pretty! It's too hot here yet to do much decorating but I love to see what others do for my favorite time of year :)

Good morning! I just got done working my 36-hour weekend (each day is actually about 14 hours counting work, breaks and travel time), so Mondays tend to be somewhat lazy days for me, cause I am not a spring chicken anymore, and work tends to wear me out a little. I'm planning on checking the gardens today to see how they're doing. Should be just fine since we've had very summery weather lately. Today is the first day of normal fall weather - the cooler temp feels so good! Will probably make banana bread today since we have a pretty ripe bunch of bananas on the counter. I also need to check the tomatoes and peppers in the greenhouse.
Hope you all have a great day!
Penny1960 - I hope you are feeling better.
DiYMama540 - I love your autumn display. I also really enjoy fall decorating, and I'm only about half-way done with mine. Welcome - it's nice to have you here! :frow
