What did you do in the garden today?

I picked a handful of cherry tomatoes. Pulled all but one of the tomato plants. There is 1 cherry tomato plant that still has a few tomatoes on it. My pole beans are pretty well shot now too. I got a few green beans from them today, but not really enough to do anything with. Maybe I'll make a vegetable beef soup and toss them in there.

I spent most of my day working on attaching a hardware cloth skirt to one of the chicken coops. It's the one that I have been seeing burrows/tunnels near. I had been thinking mole or voles but now I am thinking mice or snakes. When I was working in the inside of the small enclosed run part of the building, I uncovered some trails under ground. The diameter of which is slightly bigger than a quarter but much smaller than a half dollar.
I did not see any critters or see any evidence of bedding or food storage. Of course, if it is mice, they have no need to store food since there is a handy dandy chicken feeder hanging right there ( actually 2 chicken feeders!). Anyway, I caved in the runs and hope to finish skirting the rest of the coop and run tomorrow. I do need to go purchase more hardware cloth in order to complete the project, but I do have 1 long piece out there that is not attached yet because I ran out of daylight!

I forgot to add that I canned another batch of the corn and cherry tomato salsa and finally got a batch with some heat to it! I used a Serrano pepper, a jalapeno, 2 of the small orange chili peppers and part of an Anaheim pepper. (I think that was all of the peppers that I put in there. :lau)

I wish CT would do away with DST!

I have a sick chicken that I have to separate out for 5 days to give antibiotics so that was fun trying to figure out the logistics. Thankfully she is the last to lay so it worked out ok but boy is she not happy! No clue how I will do it Mon & Tues when its still dark out when I leave for work! Boss is going to love the request to switch my hours to care for a chicken. Lol

I bought 2 bags of mulch to cover the beds with before winter. Its going to be decent here for the next couple weeks so I'm hoping the rest of my San Marzanos will turn - there has to be another 15 pints out there & I dont want to ripen them indoors.

My onions are drying on a rack in the mudroom, they should finish just in time to bring the grapefruit, lime & fig trees in. I'm going to try & keep my fig going thru the winter & not make it go dormant. I may kill it. I may not. :lau

My last batch of the cherry tomato corn salsa was maybe a medium. I can't get it hot enough! But I have been getting & freezing tons of the sun golds so I'll have at least another batch to try again.

I may have posted this here, I don't remember, but it cracks me up this time of year cuz it is so me with all the trees & herbs.

Good morning gardeners:frow

We had rain yesterday morning, it dried out through the day, but there's a pocket of rain that keeps coming back around right over our area this morning. Not pouring, just steady so the kind that has a chance to sink in rather than run off from a deluge. We need it terribly so I'm thankful for it!

No gardening for me today. I have a few weeds to pull out front tomorrow and few things that need trimming after the heat of summer and then I'm going start prepping the bed I'm planting carrots in.

Have a great day everyone:frow
