I think my chooks are only diggin it not eating it, anyway. They seem keen to examine any disturbed soil (anywhere I've just worked in the ground must have goodies in it, right?).

Well, yeah! You agitate the worms and other livestock just under the surface!

Good frosty morning all. Nothing happening in the garden today. It got down to 12F last night and it isn't warming up much. It's now 15F and windy. I'll be on water duty most of the day. Most of the 2 inches of snow we got yesterday melted just to make way for the 6 inches coming tomorrow night. I was working on some paperwork earlier so after lunch I'll get to work on some more garden planning and trying to firm up my seed list. Your DH loves big yard toys @TropicalBabies. Those are some nice tall trees. I'm curious as to how your garlic does @Sueby. After doing some more reading, leeks apparently prefer a little less sun so will move them to the new bed I'm putting in the backyard. Hopefully they'll grow bigger this year. Well it's time to re-liquify the chickens water again. Stay warm and have a great day.

Aloha gang,
My DH and sons (hopefully) will trim at least 1 more Kukui tree today while I go feed and work with the horses. The temps here are back into the 80's, though, we do have a weak cold front passing through now and that may give us a slightly cooler day or two. We are still kicking off our light blankets when we sleep... and my coconut oil is still liquid.

I am grateful we had the rains we had and do hope that we get a few more good showers in the next few months. I'm surprised my starts are so slow to grow even though it is winter and my toms lost all of their blooms. I did expect more out of them. Maybe the big chicken circus tent is blocking more sun than I realized and of course the many lovely rainy and cloudy days. Hopefully and probably the toms will just get big and solid then throw blooms in the spring.
I have asparagus in my little garden... It takes two years to establish and then you only get 1 season from it (we can get two) mine is about 3 years old and I am kind of thinking about yanking it now that I have so few garden boxes and safe veggie space. Maybe transfer them to a pot.
I still have not made a move towards painting our decks even with so many of you going at it under harsh conditions. I should be ashamed....

DH is a ball of energy in between naps since retirement. Unfortunately @Wee Farmer Sarah he is also very accident prone so it is never a heart warming thing to see him flying about with big tools... and it is probably just a mater of time b4 he will head to the ER again . He did manage to get the backhoe stuck for a bit though not really his fault. The backhoe belongs to the ranch we board our horses at and is old and worn so the linkage slipped out on his last dump and he got stuck with no forward or back. (thank god lol)

Well just have finished with the ice, then the snow 2.9 inches then .2 of ice, then the sleet, then the freezing rain. Now it is 32 degrees and raining, sitting on top of everything else. If it's outside, it's a sheet of ice. Now comes the wind. 50 mph over night. At least there is ice to hold the snow down. or this would be a mess.

So I stayed inside and picked up some from the remodel, sealed the drafty patio door in the master bedroom (we need a new one), made a fresh batch of cheese for the weekend, chased animals, completed another unit for class, worked, and did laundry.

I made a loaf of yeasted beer bread the other day from a new cocoa, coffee, vanilla dark stout. BEST LOAF EVER! It's soft like a commercial loaf of bread, but has tooth to it and amazing rich flavor. I'll make another tomorrow.

Welcome to the new gardeners in this thread @Boonie Stomper, @BigBlueHen53, @Nardo, and any others I've missed. Welcome back @Sueby and @cavemanrich.

Its below freezing, but dry for now. A few more hours then snow, ice, rain. So, we worked outside and got all the raised beds set out in their final positions, and shoveled a lot of dirt and then placed the bags of sand in the raised beds (removing the plastic bags of course). We still have dirt to move and may need to buy some dirt, but we have to get the dirt moved first. We let the chickens out for some free-range time, which they enjoyed.


Here you can see 9 month old GLW male - he's been doing a good job sticking with the girls, and making alarm calls, and staying out of OUR way. He seems to have taken over leadership role during free range time. The oldest male (nearly 2yo) will often stay in the run. Notice the other male in the background - he is a Red Dorking and also seems to be a good male so far - he's only 6 months old. That is a Red Dorking Female near him.
