What did you do in the garden today?

I have eaten rabbit and would again. The strangest meat I've eaten is actually Guinea pig. I was in Ecuador on a trip and it's a common delicacie there. It wasn't bad, a bit overdone as I recall. As good squirrel, I would eat it if it was from the woods where it was likely to feed on waste/garabe. Add for opossum, that's pushing it for me, but my in-laws swear that opossum burgers are delicious.

The first thing I learned to hunt was squirrel, but I could never see the darn things when my brother pointed them out. So I never actually shot any. :lau
I have dressed out a lot of them though ( my brother's could see them!) I think they are delicious and taste a lot like chicken but chewier. I have also butchered a lot of rabbits ( because I used to raise meat rabbits). The one time I went rabbit hunting out in the woods, the darn rabbit wouldn't sit still long enough for me to get a good shot! :lau

As far as Opossum, I've never eaten it, but I have heard that it is oilier like bear ( I've never eaten bear either as far as I can remember).

I was excited because we were going to get $3,778.50 for my car that was totaled. However when the guy sent the paperwork for me to review I noticed that the mileage was WAY off!
He had it listed as 91,XXX and it is more like 191,XXX (if not more). So I called and let him know. Now I'm waiting for the updated paperwork to see what they offer us instead.
I can't expect others to have integrity if I don't use integrity myself. But it still would have been nice to get the bigger amount for the car! :gig

Good morning gardeners. What a jolly conversation. I have never eaten a squirrel, however, my old Joy of Cooking book has instructions for dressing a squirrel (also, rabbits & oppossums) and how to cook them. Just if you're interested. LOL! I know how hard it is to get a job after turning 50. That's why I clung to and endured a lot of crap at the job I retired from a couple of years ago. I really hated the job, but the pay was steady. I have come to the realization that in order to afford my kitchen remodel, I will have to find a part time job. And yes, I too have a Master's degree. However, when you are pushing 70, that doesn't matter. So I'm thinking part time retail come next Fall when the stores are hiring extra help. As for critter repellant @cavemanrich, I think I may give the Tomcat brand a try this year. I'm not all that thrilled with sharing my vegetables with the little free loaders. Have a great day everyone.
Substitute teaching is grand. Pays well. You pick the days. Here, I pick the schools too.

armadillo and opossum are greasy. Gator is ok, tatstes like 'off' chicken to me. Bison is grand, Not a fan of deer meat, taste of rancid beef to me. Snake is blech.....But I'm a seriously seriously picky eater.

Morning Gardeners remember being in the car with my cousins, light on the side of the car shining in the trees racoon and squirrels are pretty easy target in early 60's... do not recall limb chickens ... We weren't that fancy.. I recall how they where made same as chicken.....
ah crud hear the rain outside :he

I have only had rabbit, and that happened when I was a teen, and mom made it. The live poultry store in Chicago does also sell rabbits. Live or dressed. Same with chickens. My mountain living friend told me he ate squirrel, opossum, and raccoon. To him, only the opossum was not very tasty. He did not eat dog, or cat BTW.

Doesn't everything taste like chicken,,, :drool:drool:drool:gig Maybe that is the reason we like eating chicken,,, and skip on the other critters. Besides the added benefit of eggs:thumbsup,,,, All the others produce very tiny ones referred to as oysters:gig

I used to not like venison until I started processing it myself. I think what makes it taste bad is the fat. So I am very serious about removing all the fat from the deer meat that I can. When I do that, my hubby can't even tell the difference between beef and venison!
