What did you do in the garden today?

Cold and windy here this morning but sunny. I need to get my grow lights out for the pansies I have started and probably gonna start some herbs and maybe onions today or tomorrow. Is anyone using a liquid fish or kelp fertilizer either on their soil or plants during the season at all? I was at a seminar yesterday (dealing with sustainable Ag and home gardening) and this was a talking point. The results sound good and the pictures look good as well. I'm mostly a granular fertilizer user with using liquids more for insect and disease control. Enjoy your Saturday everyone!

Good morning gardeners. The ice fell off the trees and other important things yesterday evening. Now there are tiny ice cubes all over as the temperature went down to 19F overnight. The sun is out now and everything is sparkling. I've not noticed any roof damage yet but I haven't looked at the front side of the roof. So fingers crossed. I'm not sure if I really want to venture out today. It's cold and a bit breezy. But I do need to get the starter soil and apparently I need a new mailbox. The wood underneath the old mailbox is rotting and the box is coming apart. I need to find that cone head cabbage seed again and order it. Gurneys did not have it and I haven't found any in the stores so I'll have to order it online. Today I'm taking it a little easy since tomorrow is laundry day and that's a lot of up and down the stairs work. Have a great day everyone.

I don't fertilize with chemical fertilizers if I can avoid it. I have compost and try to use it first.
That said, I do have some fruit tree fertilizer stakes I will use since I have them. I think you just shove them into the ground at a certain distance from the trunk of the tree. Fish or kelp based sounds like good options to me. I weld be concerned about salt content. Building salt content in soil over time with fertilizer is an issue. Things will be great now and then nothing will want to grow after several years.

In think I saw thr cone cabbage online at Hirt's Gardens or Burpee. Try their sites. :)

I agree with the heavy fertilizer @BReeder! I use fertilizer sparingly and only organic, no chemicals. I'm working on my own compost now but have purchased it in the past. I just ordered some conehead cabbage seeds and a bay laurel plant from Amazon. I'll need to get my seed starter trays setup soon. I'm really thrilled to have a number of my herbs overwinter fairly well. I have never had parsley to over winter so that's a big happy surprise. The lavender seems to be hanging on as well. I'm adding dill and the bay leaf so far. And I'll be starting a pot for the Russian Tarragon as well as planning on trying direct planting of that. OMG! I just can't stop talking about herbs. Sorry. Happy Saturday!

Good morning gardeners. @Farmdog267 I use a liquid fish fertilizer. I read that it's good to use in my area because it has less sodium that a lot of the granular options and we have salty soil. As for other fertilizers, I like rabbit poop and worm castings for the veggies and herbs, we use commercially made stakes driven into the ground for the lemon tree because I worry the chickens will eat the granular option. I compost as well, kitchen waste goes in a tumbler, yard waste in a big pile the chickens turn over regularly. Since that often has pine and mesquite I use it around trees and shrubs those won't kill.

I started watering early this morning so I could build a couple of dams. I used a bunch of leftover tree limbs and dirt so nothing fancy but the chickens like them. I only need to slow down the runoff so it works. I looked at the dill and a few might be ok there's a couple of cilantro sprouts. I decided to toss the celery and try again and I'll be planting ginger in pots this weekend. I cut a root into thirds and let them dry for a few days on the counter first. We have some coop maintenance to get done and we put off processing cockerels until tomorrow morning, I woke up with a horrible headache today. We're headed to the hardware store for supplies. Have a great day everyone.

I used fish fertilizer when we lived in North Dakota and it was amazing. It didn't work in Ohio, Indiana, Florida, Alabama or here. Must really work differently in different soils.

I use the fruit tree spikes. they're easy. You use a certain number based on the diameter of the trunk and then at the drip line of the tree. I've switched to just alpaca manure and liquid fertilizer twice a month.

Hand are so chapped today from working out in the shop all week. Lotion is no good, it just burns.

New grain mill came yesterday. Bread needs made today. Sponge rose all night in the fridge and is waking up on the counter now.

Got my cone cabbage on amazon.
