What did you do in the garden today?

Was watching the baby chicks today (6weeks old). They can leave their protected area to go into the larger run. Of course they get harassed but the older chickens go to roost fairly early so the chicks were running all around the run! They were sampling the pellet feed (an all-flock), and were exploring the stairs and deck to the coop. Then one of them discovered the roost bars in the run!! Of course, they all had to try the first one out. Then they discovered the other roost bar that is higher and on the other side of the run!! One brave chick managed to got up there and several others were trying to figure out if they could fly up there. It was a bit like watching little kids! Anyway most figured out how to get up to the higher roost bar. Another week or so and they’ll probably be hanging out in the run more than their safe space.

I'd love photos 😍🤩

Lots of yard er, chicken yard work. Set up some temporary fencing outside the original run so the girls could finally have some fresh grass (and help clear a future garden plot for mom  ). Then went to work perking up their run with a tire swing, more perches, a slide and some freshly raked dirt. Also moved the chimenea to the new deck and created a cozy seating area. Planted some raspberries and a mulberry tree and then relaxed (ie collapsed) by a cozy fire. If I’m able to walk upright tomorrow there’s a pear tree, more raspberries, blueberries and hydrangeas to plant. At least the happy songs of my girls will keep my company!
Aloha and welcome!!!

Termites!
I am taking a raised bed apart that was made of corrugated steel sheets and wooden posts. I found termites all over inside one end and the two posts were heavily damaged. Any garden safe ideas to quickly eradicate then? I want tp be able tp grow veg in the soil still and eat it. I'm open to chemicals as long as they are safe to garden in.
Boiled water? Simple green? Method? Sevin? They are probably only in the wood unless you folks have ground termites. When you rebuild, replace with treated lumber and attach to the outside or paint all ends on new wood to slow their march?
How long did it take them to get to that pc of wood and have you noticed them anywhere else? Termites like wood and water....

Super, super hot and humid. We did not get the rain I had hoped for. Just a good downpour last eve and this morning. So the day started out lovely.
I baked a carrot cake being my muffin pans are still not in. I altered a new recipe and cake is awesome. I cut into big squares to share.
Sent some to AJ along with tomatoes, Jello and turkey chili with the beans I made.
She and her senior friends are teaming up and making masks. Pretty awesome.
I ordered a bunch of beautiful bandannas from Etsy, for me and DH. Mine are pretty worn and stained. I've been using bandannas for decades- from keeping hair out of face, wiping sweat, dust mask to wound care, everything. Who would have thought I would come into fashion?

No gardening. I did see that my carrots and radishes have come up along with the onions.

Pretty awesome posts gang. Take care- stay well

Planted yukon gold potatoes in the garden yesterday. Started swiss chard, lactinato kale, bibb lettuce, green and red acre cabbage. Never had success with cabbage before. If anyone has any tips please give me some! I also potted up my dahlia tubers to get a nice head start on them for the season. Cleaned up more in the garden, threw all the leaf debris in the chicken run for them to kick around. They love it! Think one of my welsummer chicks is a cockerel, just as planned! Hopefully he turns out to be a good boy. Im stuck between Rufio or Morpheus for his name. My black copper marans seem to be growing slowly and I don't know what to think of them. Is that normal? Wishing you all well and some nice sunny weather to garden in! ✌🌻🌞
