What did you do in the garden today?

I would guess the first the are determinate as they have short harvest times. The "white" may be indeterminate based on its longer harvest time, which is more common in indeterminate I believe.

But again, it doesn't hurt to hill or tower them. Another thing, if you use a container of any sort, be sure it's about 18" wide or more. The potatoes firm up to a foot away from the seed potato. 18" gives up to 9" from center which isn't too bad, but I wouldn't go less. Also ensure you have drainage of course. Potatoes don't like to sit in soggy soil.

Lastly, get those seed potatoes in soil soon. They are putting energy into those shoots you see growing in the last pic. Trim those to just about 2-3 inches with sharp scissors before planting (whether you decide to segment the potatoes or not).

Best of luck! I hope to plant my potatoes soon. I will take pics when I do.
Thanks again!!! You’ve been very helpful!!! I’ll get planting soon!! :D

I think I actually have the perfect spot for them. We have a hill that’s pretty sunny and it’s also somewhat sandy or at least more so than the rest of the yard so good drainage especially being a hill. Not great for a lot of other stuff but I think it would be perfect for the potatoes!!

Btw these are the potatoes, @BReeder! . No species name anywhere. :barnie I looked on the back too but not there either and didn’t want to post too many pictures. :lau

Maybe there IS no variety!? Maybe it’s just whichever ones they happen to be able to get their hands on that year?

This is probably why they were so cheap! :lau

But oh well, a potato is a potato to me. :lau

Well, of course red tastes different than gold or russet or whatever, but I don’t think I would notice the difference between reds anyway. :lau
I prefer reds . More moist . So if baked I do not need as much butter or sour cream . Whites get crispy easier when fried . Still I use reds for everything .

Freezing right now, but will get into mid 50s today. It stayed cold yesterday, and then the wind picked up, so it was even colder. some snow fell, but very little, so just added to the cold experience.

I’ll be working on more masks, as a new request came in through one of the local agencies. I took a 2-day break from making them, so that was good. I’ve made 50+ already, but now need to make fabric ties, which will add more time to the process.

Good morning gardeners. Very chilly morning in the low 30's but at least it's not raining. The temps are supposed to get near 50F this afternoon with just a little breeze, so I should be able to get outside and get some work done, finally. Still no germination with the jalapenos and poblano peppers. So disappointing. It does appear that the radish and lettuce seeds I planted under cover are coming up. I'm really happy that the plastic didn't blow off with how bad the wind was yesterday. I am hoping to make some progress on the gardens today and tomorrow since Monday is supposed to be a total wash out. I'm a little frustrated with our overnight temps that have been bouncing between the mid 40's to low 30's. I'm going to prep the soil for the potatoes and get them planted then work on the other stuff. Since I took the plastic off the chicken run I have plenty to use in the garden if needed. Hoping for warmer days soon. I loved the pictures of the pallet "garden" @jerryse. Very interesting, I wonder if it really cuts down on weeds? Thanks for the other photos as well @TropicalBabies and @pasdechat73, always nice. Have a great day everyone.

I saw this and thought it was interesting .

looks like a good idea for certain items, such as lettuce and strawberries. They have shallow roots, and the wood keeps the fruit/leaves above the dirt, so better for getting cleaner fruit/veg. Also, keeps the cats from pooping in the garden :sick

depending on the wood in the pallet, they may or may not last a season or two (or more).

Good Morning Everyone, We saw a freeze warning last night as well but highs will get near 60 later on. I'm debating on whether or not to leave my frost cloth over top of the crops in the garden or not for the next few days. It appears we may have another frost warning for Monday or Tuesday night as well. Its a very nice day outside though a bit breezy.

In honor of the tradition of coloring eggs for Easter, here are grocery eggs (great for coloring with the kits), versus our flock eggs (already colored!)

Finally got the sod all removed now that I've had some help

The left is where we removed the sod and the right is where the existing garden was. If it wasnt supposed to rain/snow/grapple the next few days I would till it up.
I planted lavender yesterday because I read about it being a natural antiseptic with a variety of uses including cleaning products. I've never grown it before so we shall see how she does
