What did you do in the garden today?

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I never cared much for refrigerator pickles. I can my pickles and let them set for at least 2 weeks before eating. The longer the set, the better they get.
There's a popular Jewish deli in the city (San Diego) who does this with the pickles. Each table in the restaurant has a huge jar and its "help yourself" -- I love to pile a bunch on my plate, dip in mustard, and eat interchangeably with any sammy made on rye :bow

I started some artichokes from seed and had almost perfect germination. AllenK RGV maybe your seeds were no good? Yet to see what they can really do in my climate. Second year so maybe I will get one.
We have tried 4 different cultivars since 2015 and only had 2 seeds germinate in all that time. Probably it is some odd environmental factor here or a crummy bug.

Edit--this last batch did get off the ground we had like 4-5 protected inside the cat kennel/broody box but the feral hen got them all.

I grew them in Alpine, CA (zone 9a, 9b and 10a) with great success on a 3 acre property we rented. And the dirt on the property was poor. I can't even be nice and call it a bad name. Shit was better than that the dirt we had...

Anyways...now that we are finally settled and no more moving...I bought some globe seeds. They haven't arrived yet so I'm curious to see how they'll do up here. We are in zone 8b.

Sowed nasturtiums (jewel of africa), a spinach mix, and lavender rosea today in starter containers. Then I moved the flats to our upstairs patio (enclosed) as the lows will not get up into the 50's until maybe 2nd week of May. And that's a stretch! I told the seeds that like us, they have to be self-quarantined too until this weather passes...

Those green globes are hardy to zone 7, but to be sure in the first year I would still recommend a heavy layer of mulch/hay or anything to prevent those tubers getting too chilled.

In my case I'm planning on doing green globe with 5 foot rows and 6 foot spacing. What are your thoughts there?
