What did you do in the garden today?

I'm thinking about putting fabric over our mounded rows. If I can just keep a 1ft strip weed free, it would make maintenance a lot easier on us.
If I wasn't so freaking old and unwilling to use anything but raised beds, I'd sure give that a go myself. You could even experiment with it to see how effective it was for you.

I planted some flower root crowns that I bought a month or two ago ( and forgot about). 2 of the packages looked great. The 3rd package didn't look like it had any plant like roots or anything in it. :( I planted what was in there any way and will hope for the best.
I folded up the plastic that I took off the garden yesterday. I was going to paint the 2nd coat on the 2nd bee hive and polyurethane the 1st hive but the clouds started rolling in and it started sprinkling so I moved everything under the carport and picked another batch of violets. Tomorrow I will make another batch of violet jelly. My friend made a batch of wisteria jelly over the weekend. I haven't gotten a sample of it yet, but she says it is good!
I hauled out the last bag of chicken feed today, so I will need to go to the feed store soon.

Oh, I finally got an email about my bees. I should be getting them in the 1st or 2nd week of May!

I've thought about this too, but worried water would run off. Someone else I knew would use landscape fabric on top of their raised beds, cut holes in it for the plants, then used mulch on top of the fabric. at the end of the season, they would remove plants and could roll back the fabric (with the mulch still on top) for any maintenance. They primarily grew tomatoes, and the beds were "flat" not mounded into hills.

Good morning gardeners. Everybody seems quite busy now. Cardboard at the bottom of the raised bed will keep you totally weed free the first season. The next year you will get some weeds so I'm guessing this year I will be pulling weeds. I've not had much luck with landscape fabric. The weeds seem to bust through it quicker than the desired plants can grow. But perhaps the LF and mulch is more effective together. Your garden beds look amazing @BReeder! I can't wait to see them all grown in with green plants. I started with 5 raised beds, then added 3 more in the main vegetable garden area and then added two small round beds of herbs. The 4 x 16 foot raised bed I've been working on is the last addition. I've cut the boards and the lattice for the fence and remembered (finally) to charge the drill battery. So hopefully will have a picture of that tomorrow. I'm planning on an outing on Thursday. First stop, grocery store. Later, I really need to get some more compost. Since I haven't been out I don't know what is available at Walmart or the big box stores. We're still getting frost this week so I can't imagine there are a lot of plants for sale yet. I will be holding off for another week or two before planting my little seedlings outside. It's just been too cold this Spring. I'm a bit concerned since the temps in June are expected to be quite toasty. Speaking of toasty @AllenK RGV, have you tried shade cloth on your crops? The broccoli especially. It might keep it a little cooler. So here you go @BReeder! two pictures, sort of a before then after to give you an idea of the wonderful change you will be getting in your own garden beds. Have a great day everyone.
