What did you do in the garden today?

But a couple of weeks ago I watched a you tube video about planting potatoes in 5 gallon buckets and the guy explained that the potatoes form between the seed potato and were the stem comes out of the ground!! Well that explains why I always have such bad luck with potatoes. I always thought you were supposed to plant them very shallow with the eyes just at dirt level. So, we will see what happens this year!

I am still tiptoeing with the idea of planting them as there is no rhyme or reason where we lilve. Everything roams at its own pace and appetite -- I don't dare plant something I would care about. Funny. I have the old house and there are only about 3 feet from the back corner of my house to the neighbor's chainlink fence. Which means about 10 inches that i use is actually his. Then there's an empty grass backyard with a trampoline. He's very good to me. He even lets me grow a grapevine on his fence. (It hangs over but I don't let it go through the fence.)
I look at his grass side yard (full sun) and see corn and tomatoes. If it were mine it would likely have hazlenut and pear and a sour cherry on it. My family's patch of land is very intensely used. To the inch. Not so our 3 neighbors. Empty grass expanses. And I think, goats go there, sheep over there , small cow...

Oh, trust me, I have been eyeing my neighbors land for a long time! Ours, theirs and the neighbor on the other side all were 1 property long before we got our part, The one that has land behind us doesn't use the land for anything. He used to have 3 horses. Now the only thin on that part of his property (that he uses) is his big building that he keeps all his toys in! (think lawn maintenance vehicles and tools.)

Good morning gardeners. I really enjoyed the sunshine and warmth (near 60F) yesterday. Today it's rainy and cold. I got the lattice up around the new garden bed. I think I will get the cap pieces to give it a cleaner look. I'm just glad I got this much done. I may be planting the potatoes tomorrow. I checked my little hoop garden bed and I was surprised there are radishes, carrots and parsnips growing. I have cabbage, lettuce and endive seedlings I can plant there tomorrow. The chipmunk made another hole in there so I'll be leaving some fresh cut onions for him. I really need to get to HD and pick up a few more things for the garden and drain cleaner. Of course my drain had to clog during a pandemic. Oi! My little pepper seedlings are still coming along. They should be a bit more photogenic in another day or two. As for planting vegetables in the front yard: I've been planting my hot peppers there the past two years in containers. This year I'm putting the bell peppers out there along with the okra. Okra has really pretty flowers so my neighbors won't even realize that it's a vegetable plant. And pepper plants are nice looking as well. I also have my two apple trees and a peach tree in the front yard as well. The long range forecast is improving finally, however, the weather folks are threatening us with snow again. Really! Oh well. So goes Spring time in New England. Here's a photo of my new garden bed behind the two herb beds. Have a great day everyone.

Wow, wee farmer sarah! Lattice works for you? That's great! I couldnt get anything to grow here in central nj until i got a 6ft tall dog run and added 3' wire extensions on top! The deer even ate tomato plants! Actually one side of the garden is less dramatic.and more attractive and also works. I made 8 or 9 foot tall pressure treated frames, put green chainlink on the bottom 4 ft. It attaches to a cross.piece 4 ft up, and there's open space between that cross piece and the top cross piece of the frame. The deer don't seem to want to jump between the 2 horizontals. If they do, someday, ill put another crosspiece 3/4 of the way up

Good Morning everyone! The 2nd half of the month has been more dismal weather wise than the first half. Cool rainy and windy today with a high of 50. Tomorrow looks dry and bright and warmer but then it crashes again on Sunday. The lettuce and spinach love this weather but not much else. Have a great day!

I used some reusable shopping bags to plant some seeds because I am not going into a store to go buy pots. I figured I might as well use something that we already have on hand.

We are going to move our other 4x4 garden bed tomorrow and start planting seeds in that too.

Our buttercrunch lettuce has been growing like crazy.

Don't mind the mess I didn't clean up

Looks like you cleaned up pretty good .. The reusable we bought at Costco they are very nice
hot or cols cooler bags .. those like that I donated

That is a great idea! I picked up a few more big nursery pots yesterday at Farr's when I picked up the chicks. I always think I have enough big pots but then I never do. Raining and chilly today but I should get out and repot more tomatoes and peppers in the greenhouse. Hard to do it when we have a house full of chicks. Three store bought and two home hatched with three more well pipped.

And I'm running out of potting soil. Does anyone know if there's anything wrong with using seedling soil instead of potting? I kinda went crazy this year.
