What did you do in the garden today?

Today in my family's garden we put down cardboard and mulch and planted peppers , zucchini , squash and tomatoes and now my hands are all blistered :barnie but I'm glad we got some done :)
I love my garden gloves for that very reason.

But if you can't get gloves and you are in an economic crunch, what you can do is get an old pair of sucks and cut out a few thumb and finger holes. (You don't technically have to cut out the finger holes except for maybe 1, possibly 2 on each side.)

Better something than nothing.

But its hard to do some things with gloves still that require finger dexterity.

Morning gardeners!

Not much happening here today, the littles are doing much better, they barely even run when mean girl comes near. I'm hoping, probably not this weekend, but next I can get them in the big girl coop without too many beatings. They should be starting to think about laying in the next few weeks & I don't have nest boxes in their coop.

I think the forecast is looking up a bit after this weekend, maybe I can get my tomatoes in the ground. :wee

@TropicalBabies is that ginger, like you eat ginger? I have never grown it, it can't overwinter in the ground here. Though I do understand there is a farm in MA that does a crop every summer, but they pull it in the fall so it isn't as hardened on the outside. Its pretty!

@Sueby we are on day Three of the 11 week old chicks sleeping in the big girl coop. It took a few weeks of all day run mingling to get the older birds to fully accept the chicks in the run. The night we put them in the coop...such a commotion!!! But chicks were alive and healthy in the morning, although huddled in a corner of the coop when we went to let them out.

@Acre4Me that's good news! We're your littles roosting yet? That one mean girl worries me. I might end up crating her in the run for a couple days if she doesn't quit it. I thought they were doing better, but I went out & made 3 plates of mash, she just runs from plate to plate beating on the littles - grabbing wings & feathers. I thought she was coming after me at one point - that'll be the day. I guess no more plates of mash for a while, just their regular feed stations - guess it was my bad. Or she's having a grumpy day.

But while I was out there a little squatted for me so I put a nest in their coop, was hoping not to have to do that but whatever - I'd love more eggs!

we had three pullets stalking the perimeter of the safety fence (chicks could get under, not the grown ones) and chasing/pecking/feather pulling in the chicks. After 2-3 weeks of that they lessened the pressure, and only reprimanded regarding food and treats. We also put up roost bars in the run to help give them more space to get away. The surprising thing to me was that this is the first batch we’ve had that hasn’t gone up to explore the maincoop. The deck, yes, they went there, but never inside the coop. Usually a brave chick or two will begin to roost in the coop by this age. Often one or two will try to stay there for the night After a week of bravery exploring the coop. But not this batch. Maybe the presence of roosts in the run impacted this, I don’t know. But, they are still needing to be caught and placed in the coop. Last night 2 of them voluntarily went into the coop to roost, but the other 11 did not.
