What did you do in the garden today?

Hello hello! I had a walk in the garden this morning before it got too hot. Harvested the potatoes and we got quite a few of them! None of them are super big (which is to be expected, really) but I'm happy with them. All the other plants seem pretty pleased. Got large blossoms on the squash/zucchini so they should be ready for the first harvest very soon.

So I just realized this website had a garden board...

Great to hear about all the different gardens everyone is working on. I have an 8x16 raised bed. Right now I have clemson spineless okra, marketmore 76 cucumbers, a random variety of green bean that I can't think the name of, creole tomatoes, santana eggplants, eightball zuchinni, better belle peppers, some jalapenos, and still waiting on my creole garlic to bulb. In pots I have 2 tabasco pepper plants that have gotten torn up from wind. Not sure what to do about that yet. Also have yukon potatoes in bags. The kids have knocked out all the blackberries off the bushes so I need to cut that back. Still waiting on blueberries to ripen up. Satsuma and ruby red grapefruit trees are loaded with fruit and I even have a couple of blossoms on my apple trees after a very mild winter (even by south Louisiana standards).

I'm just getting to the point where I have enough cucumber and zuchinni to start pickling.

I also need the rain here to chill out because it isn't helping my blossom rot on the tomatoes.

Welcome @BallsEleven! Curious about the pickled zucchini? I've never done it but have wondered how it was. I do carrots, cauli, jalapeno, green beans, cukes, etc, but never zuch!

@Wee Farmer Sarah did you plant your dahlia tubers? I did mine yesterday. Looks like maybe 4 survived & I tossed 3 or 4 that didn't take the neglect. Weed out the weak, LOL.

Hello Gardeners! After 3 or 4 days of rain it is beautiful outside! Got to run to Reedsport to get a prescription and hit the feed store (maybe sneak in a nursery trip) but other than that, this is a proper garden day. Going to repair the pallet/pot-deck, fill all these cool fabric pots, re-pot the peppers, tomatoes, and peppers that haven't already been upgraded. Watched some cool videos on pinching, pruning, staking peppers and tomatoes that I'm anxious to try. Need to finish the fencing on the last few raised beds.

Opinions on bird netting: do you guys prefer the fabric/woven type netting or the plastic molded (think bird-x) kind of net? I've never bothered before so I've no clue.

The ladies are loving the weather today too. I barely had time to let them out before they were lounging in the sun.

What is the bird netting for? For chickens or for garden? I use a couple different kinds for both.

It will be my first time trying it. I'm using a recipe from a cookbook called "Can you dig it?" by John Folse. Someone recently gave it to me as a gift after I started my garden. It is massive and is centered around dishes involving vegetables from a garden. There is a section in it dedicated to canning.

I'm not sure about the rutabagas, I've never grown them but thank you for the pic - I want to plant some! I just tried to get seeds but everyone is sold out now (stupid COVID). Hopefully they'll be back in stock before I'd plant them, which is apparently about 90 days before the first frost here in CT so I have time.

Morning gardeners. Rainy here today. I'm taking a ride out to a coworker/friends house to snag his rhubarb. He has 3 beautiful plants that he doesn't use so I'm going to cut it & make some rhubarb/strawberry jam. My 2 rhubarb plants were transplanted 2 years in a row so I won't get anything from them till probably next year.

My beans are starting to get some leaves, excited to see them coming up. I put up some bean poles yesterday & another trellis for some more cukes. Planted a couple additional bush squash plants. Squash scares me because of the vine borers. Get em and boom no squash & a ton of wasted garden space.

Did you check EBay for seeds, it’s weird, I’ve had good luck with it during Coronavirus.

I have not, just checked a couple online garden stores I used. Thanks for the tip! I bough dill seeds from amazon this year, lol. Seems so weird too.

I actually bougfht several off Amazon now we even bought his diabteic test strips
getting 100 for the price of 25 at walmart .. They are getting scammers so if the price is too high scroll down or wait two days

Good morning gardeners, I got all my tomato plants in the dirt yesterday as well as the asparagus crowns and the summer squash. I put a small shovel into the mid-section of my first chicken coop debris compost pile and good golly, what nice compost in there. I shoveled out enough for the asparagus and spread the leftovers around the tomato plants. We are supposed to get a big thunderstorm later this evening with heavy rains and wind so I'll wait until tomorrow to plant seeds. I noticed one row of my turnips is starting to show life. Regarding your turnips/rutabagas @Severne, I suspect you had a few where the plants were so close together they joined together. Perhaps try thinning them a bit more and giving more space between plants. I'm sure those that you picked will still be tasty. Don't forget the leaves are edible. I love turnip greens. It sure is nice to see these little green things move outside and out of my sunroom. Have a great day everyone and happy planting.
