What did you do in the garden today?

Has anyone on here ever tried to trim back some of the giant leaves on their zucchini plants? Does it work or does it kill the plant? I have never tried before but I am toying with the idea this year. However, I don't want to kill the plants because I only have 2 of them!

I'm trying it this year for the first time. I watched a video on youtube and it said it would help prevent mildew. I'm also doing it to help the bush beans I probably planted way too close .

I also have things I planted too close. I have 11 sunflower plants that I actually thought would get much taller (and maybe they still will) but currently a couple of them are struggling to stay above the giant zucchini leaves!! I also planted some lettuce under the zucchini for the shade but I think they are getting too much shade! I also have a bunch of marigolds coming up under them and a few self planted tomato plants ( I guess from the compost that I put in the garden) that I coming up too close to the zucchini leaves. Also 1 of the tomatilloes is getting crowded by the zucchini leaves.
Have you cut any of the leaves off yet? How did the zucchini plant react?

That I do not know would be good to have acorn squash in with my spinach, onions with my cabbage

I've cut quite a few off and the green zucchini don't seem to notice for good or ill. I'm going to keep at it, maybe I can get some fruit from the yellow zucchini, so far they all have been lost to blossom end blight.

I got back outside around sunset and weedwhacked around the raised garden bed and the 2 half barrel gardens as well as around the fence line between our neighbor and our property. Tomorrow I hope to get the actual yard part with the lawn tractor. I also need to make some tomato cages as they were out of them at Lowe's yesterday and they were asking way too much for them anyways.

here, squash vine borers kill squash plants every year. I found out butternut squash is delicious as a summer squash, too. They are less affected.
I try not to draw any attention to the squash. No cutting, opening easy access to inside the plant.

Isn't blossom end blight calcium deficiency?

Wow you folks have been busy!!! I had some serious reading to do to catch up. Good for you all, everything looks awesome as always.

I started out my day last eve when y son asked if I could help him clean up the monster mango branch that came crashing down the other day. Thought he would never ask lol.
He and I did first load then DH showed up and we made super quick loads of the next two horse trailers full. Big branch.
DH and I kinda had a date to go mow the lawn at the cabin but then just decided to go up for fun. It was 15 delicious degrees cooler up there today. We had lunch, went for a walk and then napped. My asparagus is still there doing better than the one down here but the deer or pigs are eating all of my lily blooms any who grabbed a few photos

and then on the way down.

That is about all I have to say for myself... today

Yeah I think it is now that you mention it. Looks like I'll have to remove all the affected fruit and get some gypsum.

Yes. I use powdered milk to stop that.

Add about 3/4 cup of powdered milk when you plant new ones. As you water it releases extra calcium.

PS you can also mix some up and spray the base of the plant throughout the growing season.
