What did you do in the garden today?

I watered the gardens, picked a handful of strawberries, butchered one of the meat chickens, picked a few tomatilloes, picked the 1 red Roma tomato, and packed up a box of jams, jellies and things for @Birdielee and got that in the mail. Oh and hubby delivered some eggs for me to 2 customers.
Now I should be paying bills. :lau

Hay is baled and IN. It's in the barn as we still need to clean out the hayshed and move the new to the back. 2 hours to get in into windrows, and 2.5 hours to bale it. DH loaded it and put it in the barn while I baled. I am so sunburned, it's ridiculous. It was 90 with a dew point of 75. We were soaked, but kept well hydrated and there was a breeze, so it wasn't HORRIFIC.

I'll let half the hayfield grow again for a second cutting, and mow the rest and let the clippings fertilize the field.

Rain is coming tomorrow night.

I need to tie up more tomatoes and find what is chewing on the cabbages.

I am sleeping in tomorrow, which means I'll be up bright and early at 430am.

Hey everyone, so I still haven’t prepped the soil for my extra squash, but I did harvest my shallots. Double the amount I had last year! My lemon tree that I brought with lemons on, after adding horse manure has a six new buds coming in. I’ve never seen citrus flowers in person so I’m really excited! Fortunately the blister beatles have moved on, and i had a baby anole lizard visit my squash! Plus a praying mantis on my olive tree, along with four different species of spider, so really all the credit goes to them. Lastly I think I may have mustang grapes growing near my chicken run, or at least vines that grow like grapes. There are immature grape like fruit on them, but I’m going to wait until fall and double check on my ID before I go near them.

I miss the annoles! I love the rusty bolt squeaking they do! I have an adorable picture of a baby on on DS head when he was little. It looked like a tiny bow in his hair!
They squeak?! That sounds precious, I’ve only ever seen the adults on my deck. They are fearless and don’t even bother moving anymore when I walk by.

I'm growing shallots this year for the first time. Could you tell me when you're supposed to harvest them? Do I withhold water? IS this what they should look like?

They're much bigger now, this was a few weeks ago. Do I just wait for the foliage to die?

Picked up more tomato stakes, qt canning jars, a red twig dogwood, and more pots cuz you can't have too many. Went fishing again this evening, we caught a few trout and perch. DP was reeling in a small perch that suddenly got hugely heavy. when she got it close we saw it was a giant bass that was trying to eat her perch. It let go them grabbed it again several times. That happens a lot in the summer fishing on the dock and it's pretty darned exciting.

Nice! Yes wait for about half of the foilage to die back, the top of the bulb will be papery looking. Depending on your climate you want it to be somewhat dry, for me I made the mistake of watering that morning, I think it just makes them easier to dry and clean. I had three mushy ones, but overall it wasn’t bad, those had matured before the others. Just make sure when you harvest separate them up and let them dry for a couple of days in like your mud room or shed layed out. I’d hang some up like you would for garlic or herbs, you can plant a single bulb in the ground next season similar to the starters you buy from the store or hang them/braid all up together and just cut them off as you use them. And you can use the fresh green as chives, I used them in zucchini fritters, definitely better the my chives. But do keep watering them until harvest. Lol

Good morning gardeners. Got the weed whacking done in the big garden yesterday. I noticed there's a young groundhog hanging around and zooms into the drainage ditch when he sees me coming. He's only about 12 inches long right now. The weather was pretty decent yesterday, however, the sun is always more intense over the big garden so work there is a little slower. This morning's walk through the garden was nice. The leeks are growing bigger, my second planting of carrots are doing well as are the turnips. I picked another large handful of peas and discovered a green bean on my bush beans near ready to pick. I'll wait another day or two to give it and the others more time to grow. I have some more zucchini developing as well as the yellow squash. I don't think pollination will be a problem as it seemed like the local bees were having a party in the squash. The littles did much better with their "free ranging" time yesterday. When it came time to return to lock up they finally figured out how to get back inside. My bird house gourd plants are getting bigger and their leaves are really big. I'll try to get a good picture later. They need something to climb on. I have an extra piece of lattice that might work for them. It's supposed to rain starting later this morning, or early afternoon. So that will dictate how much time I spend outside. My okra buds are still growing @NewBoots. So hopefully I'll get some okra out of them. And it's nice to hear someone else mention zucchini fritters @Kenzelton the 3rd. I discovered them last year when I was inundated with summer squash. They are really tasty and freeze well. Have a great day everyone.

Here's the garden this morning.

Yup. At night the males make a sound like trying to turn a rusty nut off a rusty bolt. It's adorable. And in the day time, they stomp their little feet and flare out and flash their red beards to attract a mate. I love them! The leopard geckos freak me out when they toss their tails and the tails keep wiggling, but eh.
