What did you do in the garden today?

Morning Gardeners well my artichokes have gone dormant after the hens decided they were better suited to dustbaths. They do that normally in their second year anyway in our heat and come back in the Fall(nov) to grow again. I am thinking later today I'll get out and search for those tubers and set them into a better potting mix and locate them behind the chicken wire. The pineapples are not looking happy at all the lower leaves are fading which I have never seen them do before. Had to re-chain the chainsaw yesterday for a fallen limb. Man I do love a fresh chain when you have a good sized job to do. The grass really ins't as tall as it looks here except on the fence it isn't worth the weedeater line it eats to keep that clean. It is a real head scratcher how that limb broke, it survived Laura and the 50mph winds a couple of weeks ago and that portion shows no sign of disease.

Next year, I am definitely going to pinch off all the suckers off my tomato plants (and keep them much shorter). My sister did this and her plants are absolutely loaded with fruits (she's canning, but so many are going bad because she can't get to them all)! I didn't, and thought I was going to get a lot, but would only get a couple ripe at a time. I pinched all the suckers and new tops off last week, and everything is ripening at the same time. Who knew (other than everyone)?!

We finally got rain yesterday. Last night, I put off getting ready for bed just to go outside and watch the storm. It was constant lightning and thunder, and the rain felt wonderful. I love storms! It is significantly cooler today.

The beets and radishes and spinach are starting to come up. One of the pea varieties probably won't come up as I am pretty sure birds found them. The other peas are purple, so maybe the birds won't find them?:fl

I was just thinking that this is a HUGE thread and things get lost. IDK. I suppose we can just put it here.

I can see both ways. Maybe a thread on what would you definitely NOT plant again (and why) and what you will definitely plant Again (and why). If you do a one sided thread (only what not to plant, for example), posters will naturally want to add what went great, and what they would plant again.

I never venture out of this thread so I'll never see it, lol. Unless someone links it. *hinthint*

Morning. Raining out there today, got a half inch so far. Could use a lot more!

@Swiss I always faithfully pinch suckers in the beginning of the season then get lax & they end up out of control like right about now. :lau About this time I start topping them anyway & will start pinching flowers soon too so they can concentrate on what they have before the first frost. It hasn't been a stellar tomato year so I'm slacking on the care. I don't like the Brandy Boys I tried this year so my attitude is 'meh, whatever'.

So to go with @WthrLady was talking about, I won't be planting Brandy Boys again. I'll go back to the Brandywines. I'm also not sure I'll bother with the green beans either, I'm not good at picking them & seem to find most when they're too giant to eat.

Due to COVID I didn't get any onions in & I totally miss them. I'm doubling the garlic this year too, not sure I could ever grow enough. Loving the squash, my freezer is full of it & I'm happy about that. Only wish I had a handle on the squash & cucumber bugs earlier so I had some cukes - I blame that on COVID too as I couldn't get what I needed. & I have good shade cloth now & plan on a small high tunnel to extend my lettuce season. I have a good plan for next year I think.

I found a mutant double squash today:

I'm surprised at how well my squash are still producing, I thought they'd be slowing down by now but they aren't. The bees are slowing down though, I should be hand pollinating as I see a few fruits that didn't get pollinated. I may start doing that.

Have a great weekend gardners!

I’m with you @Sueby. I don’t normally have the time to venture too far from this thread. Today I’ve been online way more than normal because of the rain. But generally only have a little time in the morning to read and post. When I picked up my peaches the woman at the orchard mentioned that the extreme heat we have had this summer in New England is the likely culprit in bringing on the plague of insects. So that’s something to keep in mind when planning next years garden. Just a thought.

Good afternoon all. It has been thundering off and on for hours and we get a few sprinkles now and again, but not much else. I got the coop cleaned up, one of the girls who has never gone broody is playing mommy, her name is Cuckoo for a reason. I got a lot of little things done outside, then came in and cleaned the bunny pen, did some household chores and generally straightened up. I'm waiting for sheets to dry and thinking about working on the hole I've been digging for a bit before I get in the shower. I'm procrastinating if you want the truth.

I ordered some fabric and hoops today for a row cover, I want to be able to grow greens all winter for us and the buns/chickens. Right now it's hard to imagine it could could possibly freeze here but it might. Ok, enough procrastination, I'm going to dig me a hole.
