What did you do in the garden today?

Turned on the sprinklers to discourage my birds from eating the #s of chickory and daikon seeds I scattered yesterday, checked on the tomato plants ( a few ripe fruits - tomorrow), the recently planted beets (just sprouting) and icicle radish (not yet), and scratched my head mightily about the uneven performance of the herbs in my raised bed. Identical lighting, soil, watering, etc, but the performance of the plants is "lopsided" even w/i species.

Headed back out to pull another 1/4 acre of goat weed before the rape seed arrives next week. Going to throw it down over a small patch of exposed clay soil I have to provide some structure and protection for the new seeds. and if that doesn't work, I'll use it as bedding/litter for the chickens once it has dried.

Welcome to the gardeners thread

I am all the way at the bottom of Alabama.

It is great to know where the other gardeners are as when their seasons are
Welcome
Winter Garden shaping up
Looking great .. Just Great

Looking good! What are you putting on the sides?
Cheap 6 mil plastic. For the first year I am going to test and see if I can get away with using cheap crap. It has to last from late October to mid April. If it goes bad I can fix it since its only below freezing at night here. If it turns out that it costs too much to replace it frequently I will move to the UV protected plastic sheets that greenhouse websites sell. I figure its easier for me to buy new plastic every fall than it is to store plastic in summer for multiple year use. I have very limited space for storage right now.

Hopefully my cat does not use it as a scratching post lol

This week got out of hand—I'm 25 pages behind! *heart attack* Tuesday (Monday? can't remember, what did I tell you?), we had wild storms roll through all late afternoon and early evening. Went out about four to peek in on the chickens and they'd already tucked themselves in for the night; at least they 'warned' us. A tree came down in the woods, but it was yet another scrub maple so we don't care. :p Other than that and mucho rain (about four inches...so glad I grabbed the tomatoes after visiting the chicks!), we're fine, thank God. We could hear the tornado sirens in adjacent counties, and friends from church had a twister go through their town, but happily, we're all safe!

A few mosquitoes snuck into the house, which has not helped my week. I'm not keen on spraying repellent on myself for indoors...maybe I'll put peppermint extract onto a cotton ball and tuck it into my bra?.

Thanks to all who shared good recipes! Who shared the keto bagels? They look great! I got to spend 6 months on Prednisone last year; doc put me on Keto to help with the weight gain and I have not looked back. That said, @Wee Farmer Sarah, I will keep my eyes open for a GF/DF bagel recipe. There has to be a good one out there!

Your new pooch is adorable, @WthrLady! ❤ No doubt she is going to be a delightful addition to your place!

Also, enjoy your weather swings. That sounds like SOOOOOOO much fun.

:sick

So glad you have lovely Lily with you right now, @littledog. Goldens are wonderful dogs, so sweet-natured and funny, too. (They really are clowns in fur, actually...)

Do your society garlic wear monocles, @igorsMistress?

Also, very sorry to hear about your allergy issues (and the heat, ugh). Have you tried Nettle & Quercetin? It's a weirdo herbal supplement. ;) My doctor recommended it to me during the flare-up that required the Prednisone and I still take it—helps a lot. Darling chicks...and your garden looks marvellous!

Oooo, random, but I can hear some of our woods' Great Horned Owls calling to each other in the woods! Bit odd in September, but...so cool! Sounds like five or six chatting back and forth. Almost a full-on parliament!

Greenhouse looks good, @Compost King! Best of luck with it. I'll be interested to see how it does. What do you think you'll grow inside it this year?

Love the pictures, @TropicalBabies! Nice to see you! That wood rose is fascinating. What a cool plant!

Enjoy those tomatoes, @Stepnout, they look lovely!

Welcome to the thread, @Battles house! Congrats on your garden this year. Pulling those tomatoes is difficult, especially when they've been productive...but it's good you have new things to put into place. My in-laws used to have property on the Gulf Coast of 'bama...LOVE it. Beautiful state, wonderful people! Lucky you! ;)

Other than gathering ripened fruit, greens, and seeds ready to be saved, I have not done much in the garden since Saturday...though Saturday I was outside in the garden at about 7:30 and didn't come in even to eat until maybe noon or 12:30. So my dues are probably paid. ;P Pulled some "through" plants, and planted tons of seed for fall and winter gardening. (We just use a row cover over PVC arches for now.) Kale, tatsoi, mache, mini cabbage, spinach, beets, radish, mustard, chard, and a little more basil and cilantro. The latter have already germinated! Turned the compost, which would have been easier to do *prior* to throwing some of the worn out garden plants into it. Hey, it was before coffee.

Bit the bullet and ordered some glassine envelopes for the seeds I've saved, so sorted all that and put those away too. I harvested the nigella pods and will sort through those when there aren't so many other things going on.

Those owls are still going at it! Wouldn't you know it, sounds like one is in the trees not far from the coop. Wonder what the chicks think of that... (It's quite secure, but it's not going to keep owl gossip out.)

Our little tortie cat is doing well. Looks like the medicine did its think, thank God! She is hoping for a handout right now. Little does she know she gets more medicine in a few minutes... ;)

Think I may tuck some more kale, chard, and spinach into the flowerbeds this weekend. Oh, and I did freeze the nasturtium leaves—now I need to remember to pull them out and see what they look like! Already thinking how I'm going to miss their nutty sauteed goodness in my eggs. Not bad shredded and raw in tacos, either, FWIW.

Happy gardening all! Do stay safe from smoke and heat and everything else being thrown at you out there.

@Compost King I understand the storage issues, not much space here for that either. I hope it all works out, I’ll definitely be following your progress.
@NightingaleJen thank you! As for nettle and quercetin, is it for allergies? I’m taking an otc antihistamine and was thinking of adding a second but haven’t done so yet. I did some research on air purifiers and bought one today for my bedroom, just waiting for delivery.

ETA I looked up the quercetin and nettles. Can’t do nettles, impacts blood pressure, but ordered quercetin just now. Thanks!

Glad you had no more trouble than that, it's good to hear.

Made my grocery run and picked up some kfc chicken on the way home. Such a guilty pleasure. To make up for it, we gave our ladies some non-fat yogurt mixed with oatmeal, (and the chicken bones & scraps.. shhhh) and they loved it. Got 2 pints of green cherry tomatoes canned and 1 pint of that southern chili sauce canned too. Didn't get everything done that I wanted but tomorrow's another day. :) And welcome to the new folks and as @igorsMistress said, we love pictures of your gardens and harvests...and chickens :).

Wow! It took me a couple hours of reading to get caught back up here! I thought it was a bit funny that I have been canning pears today and was reading about others and what they were going to do with pears. So far I have only made sliced pears with cinnamon. 15 pints.
I still have about the same amount of pears left to still use. I think I will use some for a jam or jelly and then not sure about the rest. I also planned to try tomatillo jam and zucchini relish but haven't had the time to get to them yet. @penny1960 my tomatillos are getting eaten up by bugs. First it was the squash bug now it is the green/yellow ladybug.

On another note, my mother passed away in her sleep Sunday morning. I'm going to the funeral parlor tomorrow to see what we are actually allowed to do for a service. She pre-planned her funeral but that was pre-covid. I don't think they will allow us to have the sit down catered meal she wants to have. Plus I'm not positive that the restaurant she wants to cater it has made it through covid. It may be closed for all I know.
So sad for your loss Karen! :hugs

Hi everyone...I just caught up. ..I'd do a recap of everything I just read, but my brain isn't functioning at it's full capacity...getting sleepy! I haven't been doing as much in the garden as I should be! We've been eating watermelon, honeydew & crenshaw melons...so, I have been enjoying the garden. We also have pears that need to be picked, I will dehydrate them, my family doesn't like them canned!
We had to add some extra wire to our free range chicken pen & an additional fence structure on the enclosed pen to keep some escape artists contained. I honestly can't remember if I shared that here...:old

My NZ doe kindled 13 kits in her first litter...we are trying to keep them all alive! I will share a video when I get back to my home computer, I'm taking care of our grandson for a couple of days, so I'm away from home & I don't know how to embed a YouTube video from my phone! I do have a picture though...too many kits! Can you count all 13...it's hard to tell where one ends & another begins...💞

You all have been busy, I will try to keep up better!
Have a good night! 😊
