What did you do in the garden today?

Morning all. Home baked bread sounds fab right now!

Relaxing before heading out for family shenanigans. DH is out filling propane tanks for the generator. I'm not sure if everyone is just making a big deal about it, but they keep saying to expect to have no power. Whatever, I think it's dramatics.

My BFF is a respiratory therapist on the COVID floor, she got her COVID shot a few days ago - I don't think she had any choice, but even if she did she would have gotten it.

Hope you all have a great Christmas Eve & Christmas, if that's your thing!

seed sources???

A while back some popular seed sources were mentioned. Seed Savers, Burpee, etc. But, there was one that several mentioned, But I cant find the part of the thread where this was discussed and I didn't save the link. I'm pretty sure that site is where I found something I wanted to purchase, but I need a name reminder! So what sources do you use for seeds?
I try to get most of my stuff from High Mowing in VT. Other than that I order from either Burpee or Gurneys. I have ordered from Amazon too.

I’ve purchased from Amazon, southern exposure and Native Seed Search. Burpee is usually pretty good but I’m not impressed with Ferry Morse.

I mainly use Southern Exposure Seed Exchange which is based in Virginia. I’ve had good luck with them so far.
I was not impressed by Burpee when I ordered from them. They are okay for specialty hybrid stuff but not much else. They also tend to put different names for varieties on their in store packets which makes it annoying cause you can’t look up more info on the variety.

@igorsMistress and @ChickenOwner57 - Burpee - I have mixed feeling on. First, they are spot on for germination - if it says a specific % germination it WILL have that rate or better (in my experience). But, I've had some issues with live plants and when seeking out help have gotten poor response (in response time and the actual response) - they clearly have outsourced their customer service and employ "horticulturists" without experience or much knowledge. So, I stick to seeds from them as I'm pretty sure I know more than their "horticulturists" based on the information I've received from them.

I'll have to look up Southern Exposure - don't think I've heard of them before.

I agree on the customer service from Burpee. It’s not at all good. Southern is ok, but it made me angry that they charged me extra for a fall order. Um, excuse me but that’s when you plant garlic! So not going back there but others may have had a better experience. I really like Native Seed Search. They have many heirloom varieties and excellent germination rates. They are a desert seed co but I imagine the seeds would do ok anywhere if you have the growing season for them. I don’t know about customer service though, I’ve never called them. I’ve heard many good things about Gurney.

Morning all and Merry Christmas Eve! Good for you @karenerwin for taking your first leap into bread baking. It's really not all that hard. Sourdough is a little more work than regular yeast bread because the starter needs to be fed occasionally. My starter is 8 years old now. Because DD has celiacs I am learning how to make gluten free breads. That's a challenge. My first attempt at a french baguette came out pretty decent. I just joined a group to learn how to do gluten free sourdough bread. I'm excited about that. As for seeds: I'll buy Burpee seeds at my discount store, but am not totally thrilled with their online stuff. I have had very good luck with Ferry Morse here, however I've only purchased their seeds at HD. I haven't been overwhelmed by the seeds I've ordered from Amazon. I will check out the High Mowing in VT. The temps are going up pretty fast today. The rain is supposed to start around 4 pm so there's plenty of time to prep (knock on wood). I'm sure the basement wall will be fine. I do trust my contractor but there's still that little nagging fear whether the few thousand dollars I spent on repairs will stand up to this impending deluge. I'm so looking forward to making cookies and watching our movie tonight. Have a great day everyone.
