What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning. I woke up to the sound of pouring rain this morning. We still have power (knock on wood) but the rain I expected to just slough off is actually freezing. It's been below freezing all morning. The trees are glazed but nothing has come down yet. I wouldn't worry about your sugar snap peas @Artichoke Lover. They should survive the cold, perhaps take a little longer to germinate, but peas can germinate at lower temps than other vegetables. I really hate ice storms but I'm glad this isn't snow. We've already had nearly an inch of rain and if that was snow it could be as much as 12 to 16 inches deep. I got my new spice rack hung on the wall yesterday. I even used a level to make sure it was not leaning the wrong way. The matching wall shelving unit arrived this morning already, but I really want to get working on the painting in the living room first. On the up side, the ice dams on the eves are getting smaller, thank goodness. Best of luck to all of you not accustomed to dealing with the cold temps. It will all melt eventually. Even in Connecticut @Sueby. :lau

Got about 5" of light fluffy powder last night. Quite a bit of blowing and drifting too. So glad I don't have to go out in it!

I'm defrosting my freezer today. I found a couple of very nice surprises in there. Turkey breast for dinner this week!

I won't be going up to the green house until tomorrow afternoon, or else Sunday when it gets to about freezing. We'll see what the -8 forecasted for tonight does to everything...

We were blessed at our elevation by being in a narrow inversion layer. We stayed at -20F while just 200 feet below us they were at -31F and that's NOT the windchill.

No power loss/sharing yet. They only shut you down for 30-60 minutes, but it's hard on electronics.

Couldn't find the robot vacuum this morning. Managed to get itself under the giant laz-e-boy chair. Probably laid eggs under there. pffft.

Only 125 pages left to catch up on! I got all caught up on the MI thread, and now I'm working on this one. I'm glad I decided to catch up because I have laughed quite a few times (and that video of the chicken stealing the mouse from the cat is hilarious. My sister said, "Chicken told that cat to stop playing with its food 😆")!

Maybe it was a bad idea to catch up on this thread because I'm impatient for gardening season! I'm not sure what I'll be able to do garden-wise because I don't know if we will still be living here or if we will be in our own house. I don't want to do all the work and leave it to my parents to take care of (or let die). So, I'm planning on a small container garden of just tomatoes (my container is about 3'x3', I think). If we do move into our own house after the spring planting time, I hope to do a fall garden.

I also requested a bunch of seed catalogs because they were mentioned (y'all are bad influences!:gig).

I used 5 gallon buckets for tomatoes and peppers. It makes moving easier.

1-3 inches expected in the next 24 hours. Not bad enough to shut anything down, and not nearly bad enough to force me to stay home either. I miss rain. It hasn't rained since November. Just the fluffy white stuff falling silently from the sky. Alas.

Hope to get the seed starting setup/niche done today, maybe get the seeds I want started too. They are going to live in my makeshift pantry where cats and toddler can't crush or eat them. May or may not have enough energy to get started building the aeroponic tower proper. Hit or miss on energy levels right now, and doesn't take much to wind me. Blegh.

The little bit of yellow at the top of the snow is the end of a ruler which is on top of my car. Our snow is pretty dry but there is a lot of it and the temperatures are pretty low with the windchill so I can’t be out in it for very long.
I’m using the time to make jellies and can tomatoes. Plus it adds heat to the house. 😁

I work from home so I don't have the day off....unlike everyone else in my house. :rant
