What did you do in the garden today?

We got invited to go out to dinner with my parents and brother. Since we were out already (dread leaving the house with the snow and freezing cold) I decided to stop at the hardware store on the way home and pick up the steel rack and grow lights. The grow lights were a deal at 2 for $29. I used 4 - 1 for each shelf.

So, chickens they are! Scary Bad snow!!!
Ha ha, same with mine!
The nice new huge yard I built for them, full of sheltered perches, a covered dust bath, lovely wood-chip surface, entertaining stumps and branches to jump on, was SOOO SCARY because of the snow. They stayed in their covered area, and wouldn't even come into the big yard for food, go figure...but they still would rather roost on top of their coop (that's in the covered area) rather than IN their coop, in below-freezing weather.
Oh well, they have plenty of choices, so I guess it's up to them. At least as the daylight has started to increase they're laying again, always in their nest boxes, so I suppose I should quit making fun of them for being scared of snow.

I'd scheduled a few days off from work last week and I had a full schedule of gardening plans - install the gates that I built, make some raised beds out of landscape timbers that have been sitting around, install a handrail along the steps that go down to the garden, go through my seeds to see what I have and what I need, make some repairs on the wiring of my utility trailer - then Snowmageddon happened.

Or what passes for Snowmageddon in our area - so many folks in other areas have it way worse.

Before the snow hit, I did get two small raised beds installed on either side of the trellis where I'm going to plant kiwi and loofah vines. So a small accomplishment.

The rest of my days off, I stayed inside and tackled my huge sewing pile, and I actually got all of my horse blankets patched and mended, while watching the first two seasons of the "Medici" series on Netflix. LOL, I feel so lazy - but I'm so happy to get those horse blankets done and out of my hair, at least for the moment until the horses start playing around and ripping each others' blankets again.

Two of the tree seedlings I ordered from Gurney's arrived yesterday, the native plum and the redbud. Just in time for me to go back to work - boo. I put their roots in a bucket of water, and hopefully tomorrow I will have time to plant them.

My native plum tree is supposed to arrive today! I’ll admit I’m in a bit of a panic because I wasn’t expecting it to ship until March and I have no idea where I want to plant them :gig

In the deepest pile of snow and ice. Waaaaaay down. By the time you hit dirt, it’ll be time to plant.

The only thing to watch for in that setup is legginess in the seedlings. If they start stretching too much, drop the lights down until they're only about two inches off the tallest plant. I had that issue with hardware store grow lights a couple of years ago. Good light, just wasn't particularly strong.
I hear you. These are actually pretty bright compared to the reef aquarium light I had some of them under and they were doing very well before so imagine its just better now. We will see...
