What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning all. Thanks for the heads up for flowers at the mailbox @wyoDreamer. I've had some success with flowers at the base of my mailbox but never noticed bees around them. Our road is heavily salted in the winter so not much grows well there anyway. Still enjoying warm temps for now. No rain in the forecast until Friday, then more rain next week. I took most of the plastic down from the chicken run yesterday and installed another roost. I'm considering getting a few baby chicks so DD can experience raising babies before she moves out. I gave her the availability list I got at the feed store and after lamenting our big girls would likely beat up some little Easter Eggers she picked Columbian Wyandottes. They won't be here until the end of May so that gives us ample time to prepare. I can also be finished up with planting by then as well. There's still not much that can be done in the garden now. The hoop frames will be delivered on Wednesday then, when weather permits, I can set that up and start warming that bed for planting the cool season plants. I need to find a good chipmunk repellant to keep the little darlings from devouring my baby plants.

Ah! I see, he sets his sights high and has a dad who can deliver! How tall is their “garage”? They look so little inside!
4.5 ft I believe.

Edit: correction, is roughly 4ft 2inch. It should have been 4ft but I leveled with the other side and the ground is sloped a bit. 4.5ft was the mark for the top of the deck joists, not the bottom, before leveling.

Happy Spring, All! We love reading what everyone is up to in their garden. This weekend we planted 96 pepper seeds! :-)

That's triple the number of pepper plants I have started. What will you do with all those peppers?
And we still have probably another two flats to plant! :) We will have our annual plant sale in late May, but we're also keen on getting as many growing as we can. We decided this year that we wanted to grow at least one variety from each of the five main species of peppers, so we have plans for over 20 varieties. We will eat a bunch fresh and sell some at the farm stand, but we'll also be drying and grinding a ton. We're planning on a couple varieties being really nice ornamentals in post as well.

I have never got around to setting up rain barrels. I really should though, because we get days of rain like this and then there could be a week or more of no rain. In mid-summer it still rains but not nearly is much. It could be 2 weeks without a drop sometimes. Raised beds need water from the hose in those cases, which could be coming from rain barrels.

2 weeks without rain? we have 4+ months without a drop. I should collect rain water and I hope I will in my new place.

i had chipmunks and/or squirrels eating my tomatoes last year and made a cayenne/garlic/dawn/water mixture and sprayed them about 1x a week or after rain/watering. They left them alone after a few weeks and i didn't need to spray the rest of the season.

For us it is really worth it, because our garden, chicken coop and run are all situated in a field near the river and lower in elevation from the house, and due to FEMA flood zone rules, we can't build any "permanent structures" down there, including power and water. Fine, we just have a filtered rain barrel system to collect water from the roofed part of the chicken house - living in such a rainy area, we have two more rain barrels collecting water from the original, which gives us all the water we need for the chickens, the garden, filling smaller barrels, watering and buckets for our trees.

did you make your filtered rain barrel system? I am looking for the information how to make it.

lantana is somewhat salt resistant, it grows fast and attracts bees. I agree they should be away from the mailbox. something low, green and non flowering would look nice.

I’m sorry. I know my experience was similar, but he ... well, it was a very traumatic end. From surgery to the end was a week. $4,500.
So sorry to hear that you had a similar situation and that it ended badly. Did you ever find out what was wrong with your dog?
Lucky is home now. I picked her up last night. So far no vomiting. She has eaten 3 raw eggs and a little bowl of puppy chow. Time will tell how it all turns out for her.
