What did you do in the garden today?

I forgot to mention this @Sueby. I've had bush beans that sent out tendrils. The packet said "no trellis needed" but they really did as they got to nearly 3 feet tall.

yes, true. @Sueby they can produce tendrils, but your pic does look more like a pole bean bc the tendrils on a pole bean are all you get...they gotta climb, whereas my bush beans produced tendrils like that later. @Wee Farmer Sarah i used twine between posts to keep the tall bush beans in check. I’d pound in a post at each end of the row, and some more in between. As they grew, would provide a supportive, horizontal length of twine between the posts, for the length of the row. I’d add another horizontal length of twine higher up as they grew taller.

Haha @Wee Farmer Sarah - sound just like me, can't keep my mind made up. :gig

@Acre4Me That's what I though, they only have the 1 tendril, no other stalks, if you will, that would make them bushy. I want your bean towers. :drool

So I put the bush beans in next to the lettuce, I took down the hoop house on the lettuce & put the plexiglass up. Not sure I'll be able to keep beans & lettuce happy under the same cover, but we'll see, it was the only open spot I had. No biggie if it fails, I'll just plant more beans at a normal time.

I have finally managed to till up a few patches after the spring deluges we have been having. My back door raised beds are full of growing plants or seeded and the asparagus are coming in now , down the hill! I ate my first cutting a couple days ago. I did plant a bit of my upper garden patch (irrigated and closest to the back door) yesterday. potato sets, pak choi, radishes, mammoth pea pods, snap sugar peas and purple pod snap peas, and beets. If I can get my back to hold out today, I plan to cover some other beds in mulch and others with polypropylene and /or biodegradable black weed film for upcoming plantings. The upper garden areas for Barlotto pole beans, bush beans, summer squashes, Okra, cucumbers and etc. is ready to plant. My watermelon, seminole pumpkins, crowder peas, Tn. red cob corn and corn field beans patch( my low garden at the bottom of my little valley property) is mostly cleaned up and tilled and will hopefully be finished and ready to plant before the next rain. I have the muskmelon patch( my middle garden plot)tilled and ready to add compost to the hills and then cover with poly fabric and plant when the soil warms up.My tomato, chiles, eggplants and etc. starts are all doing well and will be ready to plant in a two to three weeks. I am feeling pretty satisfied with my progress in the last several days! Of course, there were 5 times as much on my need to do list! But for an older guy with RA and breathing problems , not bad. I hope all of you have a great year in your gardens and prosper in good health.

I planted some cherry tomatoes, hot and not-hot peppers, cantaloupe, and marigolds up in the greenhouse today. It was HOT up there! I have the door open to air it out a bit. It's 75 here, nice breeze. Now it's clouding up and will probably cool off.

I am going whole hog on tomatoes this year. I want to have enough to can just my own this time. We go through 50-60 quarts, so I need about 50 plants. Don't be impressed; my neighbor had 100 plants last year and usually cans 150+ quarts.

Regarding potatoes... I grew three kinds last year: Kennebec, Elba, and Caribou. The Elba were the most productive and are keeping the best. They're also highly resistant to late blight. My one complaint is that some of the huge ones have internal voids. I think it's because we got a few INCHES of rain in one week last August. So, not really their fault.

The Kennebec are storing the worst. There aren't many that don't have sprouts on them, and some are big sprouts.

The Caribou had the fewest spuds, but even so, had a lot. They're the real "russet-y looking" one of the bunch. I don't know if I'll grow them again as they didn't seem to cook up well, no matter how I cooked them. They always seemed to feel like they weren't quite done.

Of course, that's the one that made the seed balls! I plan to plant a few seeds, just for the fun of it.

Good to know about the potatoes!

We ordered (waiting for them still, but not marked as shipped yet) 3 kinds:

1. BLACKBERRY - Pic is of the "Mini-tuber" that is planted - Well, the actual potatoes better be larger! The idea with "mini-tubers" is that you don't need to cut them, you just plant the whole thing, so supposed to cut down on issues. AND you can charge A LOT more for the silly things. But hey, wanted to try something new and different.

2. CAROLA: We've grown these years ago at a previous home. I recall liking them a lot. Not "mini-tubers", just regular seed potatoes.

3. RUSSETT BURBANK: Figured we would try a classic. Pic is of more "mini-tubers".

What's it doing?
or NOT doing?
Well Friday it sputtered and died while I was getting ready to load bags of feed in the loader bucket . Had half tank of fuel but I topped off . Nothing from the starter . Had a new starter that came with it . So I put that on . Nothing . Had Orielies charge and test battery . Said it was bad . Replaced that and nothing . Panel lights up but would go out when I pushed starter button . Charged battery . Nothing . Watched youtube videos . One said it was sensor bad near thermostat . Said un plug it and replace blown fuse . No blown fuses I could find .

Whew! Today we ran to the store because we needed a thank you gift for the neighbor who cared for the dogs and chickens while we were out of town. Mayyyyyy have bought a pot of hyacinths and one of tulips because they were so stinkin pretty 😍 😍.

Then did some more hacking back of ligustrum and 100% evil ivy, privet, and wisteria along the property line. Need to ask the neighbor if I can attack the roots that are in her yard.

The bush beans and squash are doing okay. The pot of mint is thriving (of course).

And, sigh, when I came back to town I noticed that my adorable little easter egger pullet is starting to look male :hit. NOT COOL. We already did this once with our wyandotte...*sigh.* Maybe "she's" just going through a phase. Anyone who prays, go ahead and pray for that, haha.

Tomorrow we are headed to a discount plant nursery to look for a pink lemonade blueberry bush...and probably other pretty things. I haven't been to this particular store before, so pretty excited!!!

For those who are interested, here is my suspicious chicken at 6.5 weeks (before vacation):
