What did you do in the garden today?

Today was a long one. I finished weeding the main garden then planted the sprouted beans in the bare spot. Cut more stakes for the trellises. Planted more daffodils. Turned both compost piles. Mulched the blackberry bush, peony, and 2 flower beds. And scrubbed the rain buckets and the waterers.:th

We have wild one here left to their own over the years.
Try as might they attempt to take over the property They even dare to sprout in the tires I use to grow veggies
I hate blackberries with a passion. We think we've got an area cleared, and they sprout up again, and reach out and entwine our arms when we try to cut them down, or tangle themselves in the mower or brush-cutter blades. They'll grow in the middle of a tree and we won't know they're there until they take over the tree and send long shoots everywhere. And they're so much effort to get the huge, tooth-filling-destroying seeds out to make jam or whatever, that the few weeks when they're ripe and tasty are not worth it, at least here in our area where they take over everything.

I'm sure in other parts of the country/world where they behave themselves they could be nice to have on your property, but here they are the plants from hell.

I was just about to whine about my seeds' poor germination and ask for advice since it's been close to 21 days, but just now I checked on them, and all of a sudden I have eggplants, broccoli, and a few tomatoes popping up! Still waiting on some activity from the luffas and cabbage, but I'm a little more encouraged to give them a few more days before I try again - I think I might have planted the luffa seeds too shallow. It might even be safe to plant the new seeds outside by the weekend - maybe I'll do both just to be safe.

I did manage to fix the wiring on my utility trailer over the weekend, then picked up about 10 yds of composted horse manure, but now the trailer's parked down by the garden waiting for me to quit procrastinating and unload it. I have all the materials to make 5 raised beds and some time off work next week (and Mr. Dog to help me dig) so that is the plan. Maybe some seedlings will be ready to go in the new beds by then, if the nice weather we've been having continues?

Morning all! Got the addition on the garden fenced in & mulched. Watered everything. The garlic is looking fantastic, growing greens so quickly. I need to pull back some of the mulch & fertilize them.

I got some new seeds in - cayenne, some more dill. All the others are looking great. The peppers have their first set of true leaves. I feel like I could get them out in a cold frame but I'm nervous. Got the compost turned.

Took a walk around & saw the rhubarb & horseradish peeking through. I need to make more jam so come on rhubarb!

Ugh! The pea combs make it so tricky! I may stick to auto-sexing and sex-linked breeds after this. The suspense kills me. I've had a few people tell me the patchy feather colors (neck one color, chest another, etc) means male, in case that helps you decide about your suspicious chick.

“he” has red shoulders (a typically male trait), the most red comb of all the EE ( but it’s not prominent yet), instigates all fights with flared neck feathers, typically instigates fights with the male SS chick...so, quite possibly a male. The only other wrongly sexed bird we’ve gotten from this source was also an EE. We bought 6 EE so kid could show a pair at the fair. To be judged the pair needs to look similar (although for EE, not the feather colors) -so size, shape need to be close, and birds need to be same breed ... sure EE are not a “breed” but will be shown in the colored egg layer category, not a breed category.

luffa not so much
Last year the luffa sprouted then did nothing much. They were planted in poor soil (never amended anyway), so we dosed them with fertilizer snd they took off! So try some of that before you give up.

I go for my first vaccine (YAY!!) this morning, so hopefully I feel like working outside afterward.
Hopefully you’ll be fine -my arm was sore, but mostly to touch, I could still do everything. I was fairly tired for the next 24-48hours, but the worst was the arm bc it would wake me up when I rolled onto it. So, did the vaccine make me tired (via my immune response), or was I tired bc for 2 nights I was woken up by the sore arm?? :lau

It is really spring when the rhubarb peeks up from the ground 😍
Rhubarb pie and rhubarb crumble, yummy. I have rhubarb in the freezer, luckily, because now I want rhubarb pie.. it's 5-6 weeks before we can expect the rhubarb peeking up.
