What did you do in the garden today?

We modified our raised beds yesterday to add hoops and a reemay type fabric to try and keep the darn birds from pulling up every single seed that sprouts :/ They got the first three ripe strawberries as well. I'm also going to blame the wild birds for the chicken lice I just found on a broody hen and her two adopted babies. It's an angry birds day for me.

Well I got a good bit done over the weekend luffa is in the ground and there’s been a lot of weeding and watering because of the heat. They are saying we have a chance of rain Friday. I have my first broody hen and she refuses to be moved into into a different box or a broody cage where t he other won’t bother her so everyone is having to put up with her in favorite nesting box. She’s still pretty nice to me but she’s not tolerating any of the other chickens. She keeps trying to drive the roosters out of the coop and she actually bloodied my huge RIR rooster because he wouldn’t run! He does now! Also went kayaking this weekend and stumbled across two snakes we’ve only found 1 in all our previous trips!

Bad Broody! 🤣 That mamma better simmer down!
Looks like you had fun kayaking! Those are some really nice views of the river!
I remember we had raspberries once, we had to mow them down because we were too busy to care for them. We did sell them fresh while they lasted! 😋

Yesterday I snapped clamshell containers over my strawberries to keep whatever else is eating them away. I picked over a pound of blueberries on the weekend - those plants are netted so the birds can't get them.

Pulled out one mystery squash that is definitely not the pattypan squash I thought it would be. Last year I grew a terrible accidental hybrid so all squash volunteers are getting removed unless I can clearly id them.

Last week's gopher is deceased! Hopefully that's the last one for the season, I hate how much time I waste digging out gopher tunnels.

Work in garden going well! Not done, but progressing well.
Oh, my work in the garden is done around November. :lau I know what you mean, though. :)

Getting the garden that will have the tomatoes, melons, and peppers in better shape. I spent 3 hours digging out clumps of grass and weeds; it's the first time I've been in there this season, so it sure needed it.

The soil there is heavy, heavy, heavy. With the little rain we've had, some places are just about cement. We're supposed to get rain tomorrow night, so after it dries a little from that, I'm going to dig all the holes I need for the starts. I plan to add some greensand to each hole and mulch the heck out of everything there.

I can sure tell the spots where I had some extra heavy mulch. I'll get decent soil up there yet. I have a pile of leaves from last fall waiting to go on as soon as I get everything planted.

I have a lot fewer tomato starts than I was planning for. So many just didn't sprout! I will probably buy some more... sigh.

@Sally PB -ugh! Hate it when seeds don’t sprout, messing up the plans.

well, temptation got the better of me. I bought cabbage and brussel sprout starts when I went to the feed store for chicken feed. Looks like the bed I was going to use for them later in the season will be used a little sooner than expected. Just need to get the supports for insect cloth up.

Garden looks lovely. Take care with your Achilles. I had the same burn a few years back- wound up with Achilles Tendonitis- had to wear a boot for 3 months. It was terrible, but the pain was worse- every step an agony. Hope that is not what you have.

Ugh... I hope that's not the case. I've been battling elbow tendonitis (tennis elbow) for at least 6 months and it is debilitating. The back of my heel is tender when I press on or around the tendon. Clearly there is inflammation. I've been doing stretches but it doesn't feel sore to stretch it. I don't know.... Just weird that it mainly burns when I walk.
